Robert Neville is the last living man on earth ...but he is not alone. Every other man, woman and child on the planet has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood. By day he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive like this?

One of the finest novels ever written.

Regardless of the debatable merits of the recent Will Smith version of I Am Legend, one good thing to come out of the films release is that more people are exposed to the superb novel the movie is based on.
It's hard to believe that this novel was first published in 1954, as it remains remarkably fresh and contempory.
Infact, with modern concerns over the enviroment and mankind's place in the universe, the novel seems even more pertinent.
I Am Legend is a delightful enigma. Is it a horror story? A tragic character study? An exploration of man's isolation in a terrifyingly plausible future? Well it's all those things and more and in the final analysis ends up being simply one of the most beautifully written novels in any genre. Richard Matheson's writing manages to wring every ounce of tension and tragedy out of the story that by the end you feel as drained as our protagonist, Robert Neville.
This is a classic novel of the 20th Century(or any century for that matter).
Buy it and remind yourself why reading can be such a pleasure.
And be assured, there's a reason why Hollywood's had three cracks at adapting it.

 Thought provoking read. With Vampires!

I was quite surprised when I realised that this book was written in the 50's. It is surprisingly contemporary and will translate well to film, the Will Smith helmed version is coming shortly. The book itself is short, only 156 pages and was not what I expected. This is not an action packed thrill ride. This is the story of the last human. Alone in a world filled with Vampires. By day he lives his life, gathering supplies, repairing the damage caused to his house by the night time attacks and slaying Vampires as they slumber. By night he shuts himself away and contemplates his lot in life. There is a very tangible sense of loneliness. His daily routines to stave of madness, the longing for companionship. This is what the book is about. There is the occassional confrontation with the undead but largely he spends his time avoiding them. The book builds to a surprising climax which leaves you looking at the Vampires in a different light. Well worth a read just don't expect a gore filled actionfest. This is not that book.

At first i was a little put off at buying this book to read after i had seen the film. But after reading the book the film has not much in common other than the basics.. The book is a excellent read even for people who are not big readers me included i would recommend it to everyone..

Best book i have ever read

If like me you were dissapointed with the film and in particular its ending then this is a must read. Apart from the overall idea the book is very different to the film. It is easy to understand and griiping to read. A real must for anyone who has seen the film!!!

 Matheson is Legend

I saw will smiths movie and i thought it a brilliant portrail of a man in circumstances of extreme loneliness and i was intrigued by the subject matter, and decided to purchase the book. Luckily i was aware that the book was extremeley different so i took them both as different stories with only the same name and character on similar grounds and i was enthralled by Mathesons attention to detail on a mental level, and his writing style is just brilliant considering the age of the book, it still feels so contempory. I loved this book and i always will do, i loved the ending too, in particular the last page, it felt almost poetic, the man is a genius. My advice to you as both a fan of the film and the book is this: Do not view the film as an exact replication of the book and you shall enjoy the film and vicer-versa for the book, in their own rights they are both absolutly brilliant and i would recommend this book to absulutly everyone. This book is legend...
