A lot different from the film and I think in some ways it's even better, which is saying something considering the success of the film. It's wonderfully written and I really enjoyed it. I'm really glad I gave it a chance.

I haven't come across many books in my time that keep me glued to its pages but this is definitely one of them, though its quite a short story by most standards theres more thought crammed in those 160 pages than in some books twice its size!
Its one of those books that when you come to the end of a chapter you just cant bring yourself to put it down. It really draws you in to Robert Neville's tortured lonely existence as he battles on against the vampires while dealing with all kinds of emotions. I think its a sad ending but a lot more satisfying that the films ending, its a shame the film didn't stick more to the books storyline because if it had it would have been a brilliant film.

after this book was written 4 films have been made "the last man on earth", "the omega man", "i am omega" and finally "i am legend" from seeing these films all films story line differs from eachother and the original novel. I can tell you the book is best by far and the story-line is easily the best (why the filmmakers made their own alternate ending i do not know). But a great story with a lot of heart. Horror, Sci-Fi, Funny, moving, thought provoking. A must read.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Good, very good!

After seeing the film I couldn't wait to get my hands on the book. And I'm glad I did it in that order. The book is so, so good. For those who enjoyed the film the book it's def worth a read, it's just a shame that the film didn't keep more to the book.

Easy reading with a great story. What else do you need?

This book is a classic. The story makes you question lots of things you take for granted and has a very powerful feeling of dread throughout. It is fantastically written and has an amazing story. This book is 100% better than the film and has an emotional and thought provoking ending. All in all i would have to say ...... BUY THIS BOOK!

Robert Neville is the lead of this sc-fi horror mixed tale, unconventional for the time, he is a multifaceted character. Faced with loneliness amid daily horror has transformed him into a figure of fear among the vampires outside. The vampires cannot get in, thanks to the garlic he's strung from all the windows, but they can taunt him, at length, daring him to come out, and in the case of the women tempting him with their carnal charms.
Bitter, alcoholic, mourning the deaths of his wife and daughter, his only satisfaction comes from stalking and slaying the dormant vampires in the daytime. The thrust of the book is how Neville copes with being the last man on Earth. He goes through serious bouts of depression, especially when he listens to the taunts of the vampires nightly from within his fortified house. He has no companionship of any kind, drinks heavily and laments the passing of his wife and daughter who fell victim to the plague.I Am Legend is written from Neville's point of view, you see the vampires through his eyes. To him they are inhuman, mindless monsters that must be destroyed. Like many science fiction stories, there is a surprise endingand a rather rewarding one at that. Engaging from start to finish.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Don't bother with the movie

This is a truely outstanding book, the story holds together much better than the film adaptation. WIth a much less clean cut lead character, the book makes you challenge and question the actions of the lead character much more-so than the film, and the ending is a lot more satisfying and makes a lot more sense in the book. An outstanding read, and a rare "can't put it down" book.

I decide to buy this book after reading the reviews on Play, and frankly being bitterly disappointed with the film.As with all good Science Fiction (and indeed all good literature), the book is less about the "monsters" and more about life's condition and the main character's reaction to it.Although only about 200 pages long , it grips from start to finish and manages the difficult trick of being thought provoking and sympathetic whilst being exciting at the same time.
All in all a cracking read!.
Memo to Hollywood Moguls : If you can't do justice to a book without totally altering it and ruining the premise in the production then just leave well alone !!!!

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Sorry Will, but Matheson takes the limelight!

The trend of film companies using Books and Videogames as a base to create a movie has been going strong for many years, the new format however always seems to disappoint the old fanbase, as they often pale in comparison. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but like the others, its nothing to the book.

Unlike the 'Harry Potters' and 'LotR's,' the book/movie share as many differences as similarities, being set in different time-lines, great variations in the enemy, and Robert Neville himself having 2 quite unique personalities. So if you a fan of the movie don't be afraid to pick it up, your in for a whole new experience...

This reviewer isn't a big fan of reading, but this novel had me gripped from start to finish. Going into depth about the book would only spoil it for those who wish to read it, all that needs to be said is that this is a gripping, varied, and truly memorable book, for those who loved, liked, or even hated the movie.
