Norah's grieving for her baby girl, Phoebe, who died in childbirth. In another city, another woman raises Norah's little girl as her own. It's 1964 and a blizzard is blowing outside the small-town surgery where Dr David Henry finds himself delivering Norah's twins. Relieved, he sees that his son is born healthy, but recognizes the signs of Down's Syndrome in his daughter's face. In a split-second decision that will haunt their family for ever, he asks the nurse, Caroline, to take his daughter away. As his wife mourns the missing piece in their apparently perfect lives, can David prevent his painful secret from pulling his family apart?

A brilliant examination of the effects of one quick decision

I saw this book and wasn't sure what to think of it. What I found was an amazing book, so rich in emotion and with a wonderful storyline. I expected a story where the characters would handily meet and the consequences would follow from there, but I did not. This is an honest, straight talking story about the effects of one decision made by one man thinking he had done the right thing for his family. Touching and refreshing throughout, this story follows the lives of both families affected by this decision of which, they were obviously unaware. I couldn't put this book down. Loved it. Would thoroughly recommend this for a really interesting read. Brilliant.

This was an excellent read. At first I could not see where it was going but once I got passed the firs 20 pages I could not put it down.

 Wow - I couldn't put this down

This book is very well written, sensitive and touching. The author's use of descriptive language strongly identifies the times and places she describes. The characters were well developed and she handles the difficult topic of how shockingly 1960s/70s society regarded retarded/disabled children so very well. I was spellbound from beginning to end - a truly exquisite read.

A really good read. Sometimes hard going but it compels you to get to the end. The characters are sharp, with emotions towards them swinging from pity to dislike. It is not light summer reading as in a girlie book, but a really good summer read for those days when you want something more than a beach read.

Beautifully written & an amazing story

I loved this book. It kept me reading throughout. It is written in a gentle tone and is very descriptive.

I will definitely read it again in years to come
