Walking the streets of Moscow, indistinguishable from the rest of its population, are The Others. The Others are magicians, possessors of supernatural powers and capable of entering the Twilight, a shadowy world that exists in parallel to our own. Each Other owes allegiance either to the Dark or the Light. The two factions, having long before realised that open struggle can only create chaos and disaster, coexist in an uneasy truce, each keeping a close eye on, the other's activities around the city. Their aim is not mutual destruction, but rather the maintenance of the precarious balance between good and evil. Anton, a young Other who owes allegiance to the Light, is a Night Watch agent, newly seconded to patrol the streets and metro of the city, to protect ordinary people from the vampires and magicians of the Dark. On his rounds, Anton comes across a young woman, Svetlana, who he realises is under a powerful curse that threatens the entire city, and a boy, Egor, a young Other, as yet unaware of his own power, whom Anton narrowly saves from vampires.Anton is assigned a partner, Olga, a powerful female Other who is trapped in the form of an owl in punishment for a past error of judgement. Together with their colleagues in the Night Watch, they struggle to remove Svetlana's curse and to protect Egor from the vampires that pursue him... Set in a vividly-realised post-Soviet Russia, where vampires operate under license and Good and Evil exist in a Cold War-like balance of power, "The Night Watch" is a page-turning fantasy thriller, an international bestseller that represents the most original writing in its genre since Anne Rice's "An Interview With A Vampire".

If you like the lord of the rings and/or Harry Potter - Youl'll LOVE this book! It really is Harry Potter for adults. The action sequences are very well written, and the characters are very unique. The idea with light vs. dark isn't new, but it has never been told like this! The idea with the twilight and the different powers from each side makes this book the best I've ever read. This book also gets better when you read "The Day Watch" afterwards. "The Night Watch" shows you how the Light Ones sees humanity - and everything makes perfect sence. You feel that the Light is the right way to go. But when you read "The Day Watch" Sergei makes some very compelling arguments that the Dark isn't nessesarily equal evil.

This book is a very easy read, and can be read be anyone who doesn't mind the fact that vampires, warewolves and magicians exist amonst us.
I had to make myself take breaks after each chapter so I wouldn't finish it in one sitting. I like to streach good books over a period of time, so I can enjoy them for a longer time.

READ IT!!

 Watch it.....

This book is very well written and extremely easy to get into. It's a very interesting take on the whole horror mythology and very entertaining because of it.

Some of the ideas in this book are absolutely excellent such as 'entering the twilight' - a world which sits on top of the real world - like a spirit world (for want of a much better word).

The moniker on the cover states the Russian J K Rowling or words to that effect and in the respect that it's easy to read and quick to get into I would have to agree but this book is so much more than that.

It's a new take on some old themes as I said before and it's inventiveness deserves a try, at the very least. I really enjoyed this book and will be getting day watch to prolong my enjoyment.

The only other selling point I can think of is that it if you've read this book then it really helps the Night Watch movie make a lot more sense.

Having said that maybe I should watch it sober - that would probably help : )

 Better Than The Film...?

I haven't seen the Night Watch movie, so when I saw the book I thought I might as well read it whilst waiting for the DVD to come out... And I still haven't got the DVD because I loved the book so much.
Whilst parts of the book may be confusing, it is extremely easy to get into and is so well written that, within no time, you find yourself absolutely absorbed in the events.
The characters are built up so well that you genuinely care about them and the troubles they're facing- even the characters of the Day Watch, to some extent.
Definitely worth a read... And the best news is that it's the first of three!

 Good adult fantasy

Not being one who would venture too far away from my normal sci-fi or fantasy authors I heard good things about this book so I decided to give it a go. And I wasn't disappointed. The storyline of the book is pretty damn good, and the action does come on thick and fast.

It is interesting the way that the book is divided into three sections, where seemingly inconnected threads are all brought together at the finale. I have recently purchased the second book of the trilogy and its been quite interesting so far. All in all I would recommend this as an alternative to the Potter series, which I also enjoyed, more to the end though when the themes became slightly more adult.
