Twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to win the approval of his father and resolves to win the local kite-fighting tournament, to prove that he has the makings of a man. His loyal friend Hassan promises to help him - for he always helps Amir - but this is 1970s Afghanistan and Hassan is merely a low-caste servant who is jeered at in the street, although Amir still feels jealous of his natural courage and the place he holds in his father's heart. Truly amazing book with harsh realities brought to life. A moving must read book which describes everything so clearly that you can vision the scene in your mind.
Most books i can't read again, but this one i could read 'a thousand times over', and still be shocked by the moving storyline.
I've not long finished reading this fantastic book! It was recommended to me by a work colleague and it has to be one of, if not the best, book I've ever read. I went through all different emotions while reading and like other readers, felt empty once I had finished the book. Words just fail me and I totally agree with everything that has been said about this book by other reviewers. What a writer!
I am currently studying this novel at A level. At first i was unsure if it was going to be a novel i would enjoy but having finished it, i think it is a truly amazing piece of writing. its a well thought out, emotional tale of two friends and their journey through life during hard times in their home country. Its a very captivating story and really enjoyable.
if your unsure about reading this, then i strongly recommend you do so, you'll be glad you did.

This heart wrenching tale explores with raw emotion the horrors that the Taliban are causing, it also explores in detail personal conflict between doing what's honorable and cowardly. Overall it's a fantastic read, i highly recommend it.
I could not put this book down..... you can relate to all the characters in some way because every character has a flaw that makes them real. It shows humanity's weak side and our need for redemption. It is about friendship and family and the fact that, no matter how much time passes, the truth will always come out.
