What an excellent read, I was born in East Ham so a lot of the
areas of knew, have just finished the book enjoyed everything
about it, some lump in the throat moments, best book I have ever
read, going onto the next one Shadows of the Workhouse which
I am sure will be another excellent read.

What a wonderful read! This book iluminated the hard life of families in the East End of London in the 1950's. As an ex midwife and newborn intensive care midwife myself I can still identify with every obstertric description contained within the narrative. That said, it is a book that is not overtaken by medical detail. It is an excellent read for everyone and one that illuminates some of the UK's most challenging social and obstetric history. Whilst it champions the skill and dedication of midwives, it describes incredible fortitude and forthrightness of those families that this midwife came into contact with. Call The Midwife just endorses my long held belief that working as a midwife is both an incredible challenge and no less a privilage.
