Richard Hammond is one of our most in-demand and best-loved television presenters. On September 20, 2006, he suffered a serious brain injury following a high-speed car crash, and the nation held its breath. On the Edge is his compelling account of life before and after the accident and an honest description of his year of recovery, full of drama and incident. It is also, perhaps, his explanation of why, as a married man and father of two young daughters, he was prepared to risk all by strapping himself to the front of a jet engine with the power of eleven Formula One cars. A daredevil and a petrolhead long before his association with Top Gear, Richard tells the story of his life as an adrenalin junkie, from the small boy showing off with ridiculous stunts on his bicycle to the adolescent with a near-obsessive attraction to speed and the smell of petrol. After a series of jobs in local radio, he graduated to television and eventually to Top Gear, one of the world's most popular shows, upgrading his car with each step up the ladder. His insights into the personalities, the camaraderie and, of course, the stunts for which Top Gear has become famous make compulsive reading. It was whilst filming for Top Gear, driving a jet-powered dragster at speeds over 300mph, that a tyre burst and the car left the track and rolled over, burying him in the earth. He was airlifted to hospital and hovered near death for several days. His wife Mindy tells the story of the anxious hours and days of watching and waiting until he finally emerged from his coma. In an extraordinarily powerful piece of writing, she and Richard then piece together the stages of his recovery as his shattered mind slowly reformed, leaving him sometimes lucid and plausible, sometimes confused and angry, and often exhausted. The final chapter recounts his return home and his triumphant reappearance in front of the cameras.

Once you start reading this book it's hard to put down. A very well written account by both Richard and his wife Mindy of their struggle to cope with the after effects of the crash on the road to his recovery. A miracle by all accounts. Would highly recommend you go out and buy this fantastic book.

I ADORE RICHARD HAMMOND!!!!!! Just thought id get that in first, sorry for the outburst, hehe, and I have been a massive fan of his for years, ever since he started on current format Top Gear back in 2002! (Top Gear is MY FAVE SHOW of ALL TIME! The current format that is, thought id put that in too, lol!)

This autobiography is a window into the life of a very interesting and astonishing guy!
I must say also that Mindy's writing in this book is great! Good on u Girl!
Im not ashamed to say that I had tears in my eyes for most of the way through, which is not good for reading properly I know, lol, but that is the emotion that comes from when u read this book! It is a very emotional read, esp for the fans of Richard and for people who know him for more than just 'the guy who had that crash'.
I have to say, not all the tears were sad ones, I thought the part at the beginning where Richard is describing his feelings about the Top Gear job was so sweet! I cant imagine any other 3 people presenting TG!
The pictures are FAB! Some made me laugh, what did he look like back then!! and Richie as a child, how cute! It is very touching reading about this past and childhood, what he used to be like, the tales, the adventues! I hope there will be more stories and tales to come from this remarkable man! Long may he reign!

 Unbelievably Amazing

Any one who watches Top Gear HAS to buy this book deffinatly the best book I have ever read, very well written both by Mindy and Richard and leads a good insight to what really happened. The book is quite graphic from Mindys story but it is a brilliant read very hard to put down I was reading it till 2 in the morning it kept you hooked that much Unbelieveable how the hamster survived such a termoil of events and came out as strong as he did at the end of it all you really feel for him and his family when reding the book its heart renchingly brilliant.
