Stephen Fry's breathtakingly outrageous debut novel, by turns eccentric, shocking, brilliantly comic and achingly romantic. Adrian Healey is magnificently unprepared for the long littleness of life; unprepared too for the afternoon in Salzburg when he will witness the savage murder of a Hungarian violinist; unprepared to learn about the Mendax device; unprepared for more murders and wholly unprepared for the truth...

 Surprisingly touching!

First and foremost, "The Liar" is a testament to Stephen Fry's astonishing way with words. The language alone makes the book an absolute pleasure to read, and the storyline never fails to surprise you. The chronology is entirely jumbled, which makes the novel slightly confusing (or at least makes it necessary to concentrate quite fiercely at times), but which also makes it nearly impossible to put down.
Above all, though, the novel was an experience which touched me in ways that I just didn't see coming. I found my heart truly aching for the characters, and after having finished the book, it saddens me a little that it's over.

 Funny & Well Written.

Stephen Fry is a very intelligent and witty man and this novel reflects that. The Liar is a well written and confident debut novel.

There are some very funny moments and Fry uses his words intelligently as you would expect. My biggest complaint is that the characters are a little aloof and hard to really like.

Fry has clearly used his own youth as a template for this novel and unless you were a middle class public schoolboy you may have difficulty associating with the characters and setting.

This is though an enjoyable read and Fry can add successful author to his already impressive bow.
