The men on board Her Britannic Majesty's Ships Terror and Erebus had every expectation of triumph. But the ships have now been trapped in the Arctic ice, and there is something out there that is snatching one man at a time - mutilating, devouring. As the Terror on the ice become evermore bold, Crozier and his men begin to fear there is no escape.

 A compelling read

Brilliantly written story that is a mix of a description of the hardship the men of the lost Franklin Arctic expedition had to endure and a (sort of) horror story. I couldn't put the book down and after the 944 pages I was sad that it was over. I truly recommend this book to anyone who likes to dig in deep into very detailed, well developped and extremely gripping stories.

 gripping

I loved this book...it may be a little slow at times but the action scenes were epic. The description of the landscape was fantastic. Also the charcters were complex. It gave a good acount of the time period. Overall i really enjoyed it.

One of the best books I've ever read.

Superb description, great inter weaving of horror, action and atmosphere, linked to some brilliant period characters, weaved around true story events. The monster-one of the reasons why the book is called THE TERROR- is one of the most original creations ever. The book was huge in length but not undaunting to read. Creepy and atmospheric, with opening pages that draw you in. I heartily recommend this book.

 Made me feel cold

Not the type of book I usually go for, but gave it a try. To be honest alot of it was hard going, and the book seemed to take an age to get through. The descriptions and the historical factors kept me interested, and the description of the freezing conditions in which the story is set certainly come across well. I was left a little cold however by the final outcome and felt a little let down by the concluding chapters. I felt the book was a little slow, with the action not coming at pace, but rather building in the background. If you like a story based on history then given a horror/fantasy theory gloss on top then you'll like this book. Just don't read it in winter...
