A fascinating slice of social history - Jennifer Worth's tales of being a midwife in 1950s London, now a major BBC TV series.

fantastic read for a true story ,it will make you laugh out loud and make you cry , a book you will find hard to put down.
The stories are so well told you almost feel as if you know the people the author is talking about , again the best read in a long long time enjoy!

A life changing and emotional book.

I was bought this book at the age of 15 by my parents when I expressed to them my interest in becoming a midwife. I had never before found a book which brought about such a mix of emotions in me, from great sorrow one minute to relief and admiration for Worth and the life changing work she carried out. For me this book was truly life changing as due to Worth's detailed descriptions of midwifery and the astonishing work she carried out I decided I wanted to follow in her footsteps and see the difference in midwifery from Worth's description as a student midwife to present day. I am now in my first year studying midwifery at university and truly believe it is the career for me. Although times have changed rather a lot since Worth's insight, I have 'Call the midwife' to thank for steering me towards my midwifery journey. A must read for anyone interested in midwifery or the history of Britain.

 Great piece of social history

Based on the author's experiences as a midwife in the 1950s, Call the Midwife told me more about recent history than anything I'd read before.

Jennifer Worth's job took her to the poorest families in London's East End. Many lived cramped in one damp room in condemmed housing with no running water, one outdoor toilet for several families, no heating, not enough food and no shoes for the children. Now people moan if they haven't got a 42" plasma TV!

It is an eye-opening and compelling read. She deals with prostitutes, a woman who had spent almost 20 years in a workhouse, a woman who gives birth to her 24th child and writes with warmth and humour.

Yet it is not a sentimental read. Jennifer Worth is not blind to the faults of the characters she meets and also understands her own failings.

It is a truly great read.

 Brilliant!!

I was given this book by a friend and it took me a while to pick it up as it really is not my usual taste. But when i started to read it i literally could not put it down. I absolutely loved it and have recommended it to all of my friends.

 Excellent read

As a midwife myself this was a great read. I could not put it down and the stories amazed me. We think that Midwifery is hard work now but I am glad I did not work back then. It also surprised me how our practices have not changed a great deal since then, we still carry out the same method of care.
