Review

The first volume in a noirish, gritty urban fantasy for adults from the bestselling author otherwise known as Darren Shan. Quick-witted and cocksure, young upstart Capac Raimi arrives in the City determined to make his mark. As he learns the tricks of his new trade from his Uncle Theo -- extortion, racketeering, threatening behaviour -- he's soon well on his way to becoming a promising new gangster. Then he crosses paths with The Cardinal, and his life changes forever. The Cardinal is the City and the City is The Cardinal. They are joined at the soul. Nothing moves on the streets, or below them, without the Cardinal's knowledge. His rule is absolute. As Capac begins to discover more about the extent of the Cardinal's influence on his own life he is faced with hard choices. And as his ambition soars ever higher he will learn all there is to know about loss, and the true cost of ultimate power!

it took me 3 days to read this book, it was unputdownable, such an intruiging story line and amazing shocks and twists, just because it is an adults book does not mean kids cannot read it , im 12 and i thought it was amazing, its not hard to percept darren as a different author and so different cuzz its a adults book, buy it now best read ever!!!!!!!

I love Darren Shan and as soon as I found out about this Triology I had to pre-order it... As i have read his other books many times I found it very hard to get in to the book unlike previous books.... I forced my self to read it and only half way through I started to get attatched....
It is an amazing book and i always think of it as one of my favourite books but not jst for the author... The book itself is amazing... It holds your attention all the way towards the end... I read it again after the first time and i couldnt put it down.. I have so much troble getting in to it the first time because it was like no of his other work and so I had to think of him as a completely different author in the end... But it truely is an amazing book and I can't for the rest to come out.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Shan's best book so far.

I have read all of Shan's book. Therefore buying this book was going to happen no matter what. As the first adult book I have read by Shan I was not sure if i was going to like it. I loved it.
The story is gripping and although predictable in places, kept me reading to the end and left me wondering what's going to happen.
The nameless city Shan has created is full of life and full of secrets.

5 stars....especially if you're a shan fan
