The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: circumstantial evidence suggests that eighteen-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide and, for the first time in her high profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep into the world of those who live 'plain', Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. As she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie

Gripping from the first page, with twists right through the book and very informative on a different way of life! Just as good as My Sister's Keeper, but not as much of a tearjeker!
I enjoyed this book greatly. It fed my fascination of the Amish way of life. The story was both gripping and informative. I love the way Jodi Picoult writes and have found her books to be very difficult to put down. The tale is full of twists and suprises right up to the very end. A great read.
I thought this book was wonderful. It had a great story which is nothing like anything i can remember reading before. Not only is it gripping and interesting, but it is also quite informative. The story is based in an Amish community, which is something not many people know the ins and outs of. It was great to learn so much about that way of life, as well as enjoying the story. The book also uses the taboo subject of neonanticide. It was also good to learn so much about this phenomenon.
I really did enjoy reading this, and cannot at all fault it. It was written in the true Jodi Picoult manner that never fails to impress. This is one of my favorite novels she has written so far.
Overall, this is absolutley fantastic, and would recomend it to anyone who likes to read something slightly different to the norm.
My adivce: read it.
This book was definately a fantastic page turner that not only kept you guessing, but also got you thinking about your own life and views, and what you would do in that situation. Out of her books, I think this is definately my favourite. Well worth a buy! :)
This book run's a close second to My Sister's Keeper. Excellent. Almost immediately Jodi brings the emotive subject of murder vs manslaughter vs neonantacide to the reader's attention. If that's not enough to get readers interested in this subject matter, then consider the subject set within the context of the Amish community's belief sysem and you have a multifaceted subject matter. The ensuing clash of the Amish 'way of life' with that of the current judicial system in the USA, (where the book is set), is brilliantly played out. As wth many of Jodi's books there is a single 'throw away' line contained within the text that 'turns the book around' and enables the reader to get to, (one of), 'the main outcome(s)'. Rather than this revelation taking anything away from the pages that follow it allows the reader to delve further into the story. This was a page turner from the very first page. Keep them coming Jodi!
