Painstakingly restored from Tolkien's manuscripts and presented for the first time as a fully continuous and standalone story, this illustrated paperback of the epic tale of The Children of Hurin will reunite fans of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with Elves, dragons, Dwarves and Orcs, and the rich landscape and characters unique to Tolkien.

Only for Tolkien fans and even then...

As a huge Tolkien fan looked forward to immersing myself in Tolkiens world once again but think there was a reason this book was never published previously. Never read a more depressing book - you can only guess at the frame of mind Tolkien was in (bear in mind just after the end of the war) when penning this tortured tale. Strictly a book for Tolkien fanatics.

 A happy tolkien fan.........

As a Tolkien fan,i was eagerly awaiting this release. All Tolkien fans(true Tolkien fans!)will be already familiar with the story from the Silmarillion, this is just an expansion in detail.
I was not disappointed in the slightest, and only wish if any more lengthy manuscripts exist, that they be given the same care and labour of love as this one.May Middle Earth live on.
As a final note, for those of you who have only read the hobbit,i wouldn't recommend this. Silmarillion fans should love it as much as i did!!

I have to agree with previous reviews that this is definitely for ardent Tolkien fans. If you are looking for a more serious view of middle earth and liked the Silmarillion you will like this.
I f the Hobbit is the only book you have read this probably is a bit heavy going. On the whole a good read though!

an epic adventure, everything you'd want from a book

this was in fact the first tolkien book i 've have read and i was blown away. the story itself could be described simply as beautiful with all the great story elements; adventure, a love story, a crisis, a good few tragedies and a hero which you can't help but like. it is thanks to this book that i'm now working my way through the rest of tolkien's work. i would recommend it to not just for tolkien fans but to those who love fantasy stories also. a word of warning though, this book does have a certain style of writing that has been known to put people off, be sure that it is right for you before buying.

 Love it!

My boyfriend brought this home for me one day after having most of the tolkien collections and I was overjoyed that it was a bigger picture on what happens in parts of the Silmarillion, i loved that book and so pleased to read more about it!
