Tom Clancy's second classic No 1 bestselling thriller -- a chillingly authentic vision of modern war -- now reissued in a new cover. Three Muslim terrorists who destroyed the Soviet Union's largest petrochemical plant thought they were striking a blow for freedom. What they had done, unknowingly, was fire the first shots in World War III. Desperately short of oil, the Kremlin hawks see only one way of solving their problem: seize supplies in the Persian Gulf. To do that, they must first neutralise NATO's forces and eliminate their response -- and so they develop Red Storm, a dazzling master plan of diplomatic subterfuge and intense rearmament. The battle lines are drawn and Armageddon beckons!

this was my 2nd tom clancy novel read.its a stunning east versus west scenario in which war and subterfuge are hand in hand with cracking storytelling, well rounded characters and superb writing.no one does technothrillers like clancy and every book is well written, thrilling and a page turner without equal.possibly the best writer of this genre we will ever see.

Wow what a book. It was a little slow to start with getting the reader aquantied to the plot and characters but when it got going it really GOT going! It is scary how real this book actually is with regards to the current nuclear threat that we face everyday. The combat scenes leave you speechless and wanting more, and you get it. A MUST read for any action fan.

 Brilliant

Having not read this before, it was recommended to me by a colleague and what a recommendation.

This book is brilliant, some of initital scene setting is a bit heavy but once the action kicks off it is non stop for near on 600 pages.

There are a number of mini plots in this book, Clancy flicks between the stories of submarine crews, tank divisions, fighter jet missions and every other aspect of modern warfare.

Red Storm Rising is a book that is seriously hard to put down, as each section of the mini plots ends you cant help yourself into reading on to find out what happens.

If your a fan of Tom Clancy or books about warfare this is a must buy.

Top 100 Books Reviewer

This is a fantastic read.
The book was written and is set on the 1980s when the world was a very different place, but put that aside and read it.
It all kicks off with a group of Islamic terrorists blowing up a very large pertochemical plant in the USSR, which resultantly leaves 'Ivan' a little short on fuel. To resolve the crisis, the USSR plan to invade the Middle East and use their oil. However, as the West has a lot of interest in the area they first of all need to make sure that they cannoy upset their plans and decide to invade Western Europe to neutralise NATO.
The rest of the book then follows the beginning, middle and end of World War Three through several different characters and scenarios.
It is a very gripping read though there are a few criticisms of the book for being unrealistic, but 99% of the people who read the book, including myself, don't care about the true range of a Soviet Backfire bomber. Also, yes, there are a lot of acronyms, such as SACEUR (Supreme Allied Commander EURope), but there is a definitions page and to be honest, it doesn't take a degree to figure out most military acronyms.
Overall, a very, very good book that you will stuggle to put down.

 Great Read

My first Tom Clancy book, and all I can say is it was amazing. I took every opportunity to read this book, during my lunch break at work, on the bus to work etc, just to get it finished, I really couldn't put it down. The story is good, and you can find a great relationship with the characters in the way the book has been written. It does have quite a lot of jargon terms, but I think that adds to the realism of the story Most certainly worth a read.
