The Godfather of all comic book and graphic novels!

| | See all MovieLoverMabs's reviews (21)

Watchmen is without doubt the greatest piece of literary fiction ever written. The Godfather of all the comic book/ graphic novel medium!

I read this masterpiece a little before the Movie was released, and immediatly i was taken to it, immersed into its beautiful, noirish, addictive storyline. Alan Moore is without doubt the greatest comic book writer. I am an avid lover of graphic novels and have read some truly remarkable stories, The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and Batman: Year One, Constantine; Dangerous Habits and so on, and even Moore's own The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol 1 and 2, V for Vendetta, but as much as they are classics in their ownn right, nothing can come close to this aweinspiring masterpiece!

Credit must also be given to Dave Gibbons for the artwork; Watchmen was truly revolutionary when it first came out. The use of nine panels on each page, also every chapter starts off with a astonishing zoom out, eg. First page shows an undecipherable object/ image, but it gradually reveals itself panel by panel.

I love the use of colour too, the palette so sumptous and in perfect unison with the story. My favourite character by far has to be Rorschach! He is a cross between Batman and Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver)! And the creation of his mask is just a miracle to behold! The level of detail in this graphic novel is aweinspiring!

I have read it three times in total; each time you discover something new whether in story or artwork that you may have missed earlier!! Indeed, it is nothing short of a joy to read! An occasion akin to reading scripture! It is the holy book of graphic novels, the blueprint. It will never be surpassed.

There is nothing more to say other than this; if you are a Watchmen virgin, then buy this gem now. Stop what your doing, put your cofee down, your pen down, your paper down and order this masterpiece immediatly (Play.com has the best price) order it now! You will not regret it!

Why?

Because Watchmen is the Cistine Chapel, the Garden of delight, the Hanging Gardens, the Godfather of all comic book and graphic novels!!!

each page shows just how much work went into this story

i saw the movie before i read the book and this is something i regret. i enjoyed the movie but having read the book i enjoy it even more now. you get a better connection with each character in the book, and a better feel for their stories. having read the book you can see just how much work went into this story and it is a superb achievment that they could make a movie out of such a complex story. the story is complex however once the dust settles it can be seen as a simple plot cover with complex stories that all fit in together well at the end. the "raw shark" joke made me laugh to myself for quite a few pages. a great read.

  stunning cynical graphic novel

say what you want, but in one way or another Moore's graphic novels contain a strong political message. a very critical view on society, politics and human relations. everytime, and also here, in a very compelling way: due to the story but also due to the graphic elements.
you're not reading a cartoon, but really a novel with graphic underscores. it's intelligent, socially critical and art, no doubt.
here, the topic of superhero's and vigilantes is taken into focus, in a rather ambivalent perspective: are they good or are they as crooked as the criminals they fight? should you be pro or contra? what about the ethics of the superhero?
boring? never!
intellectual? yes.
entertaining? very.
recommendable? no doubt.

Opened my eyes to comics... sorry, graphic novels

A friend suggested this to me and I thought he'd gone mad. We are in our 30's, why would I waste my time with comics?

I was overwhelmed, and read the whole thing in one session. Absolutely terrific. This is not kids stuff (although my wife thinks I've gone mad).

A fantastic book on all fronts.

I recently purchased this book and although I am only up to chapter 4, I can safely say that it is brilliant and well worth the £8.99.

It is instantly noticeable that this is not your usual superhero slug fest. It is much deeper than that. What this book does well, is explore what kind of psychological problems occur for these superhero's, and it also explores the destructive nature inside each of us. It's a very complex storyline to follow at times, and it may take some time to understand who the characters are, what their purpose is etc. But once you get into the flow of it, I can guarantee that you will not want to put this book down.

The illustrations are of top quality, as is the writing and production. For a graphic novel, I am extremely impressed with how well written "Watchmen" is. It's clear to me that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's spent a massive amount of time on this book, and it certainly pays off.

If the movie is anything like this book, then it will be brilliant. Watchmen is fantastic and for £8.99, you'd have t be crazy to pass up on it.

  Masterpiece till the end

| | See all GermanEskimo's reviews (200)

Great characters, good storyline, shame about the ending otherwise this would have been a classic in my eyes, gets into the modern day idea of us wanting to see behind the mask, and to see ourselves staring back, not some superman (literally), the characters are expertly crafted and details released about them are well timed and managed, it just seems to fall apart at the end with a unrealistic ending, I know people are going to say it's a comic book and it's meant to be like that, but it just feels too unreal, shame, had loads and loads of promise.

  BRILLIANT!!!!
