Jane had always lived in somebody's shadow. Escaping a childhood of abuse by marrying oceanographer Oliver Jones, she finds herself taking second place to his increasingly successful career. However, when her daughter Rebecca is similarly treated, Jane's dramatic stand takes them all by surprise. Jane and Rebecca set out to drive across America to the sanctuary of the New England apple orchard where Jane's brother Joley works. Oliver, used to tracking male humpback whales across vast oceans, now has the task of tracking his wife across a continent. To do so he must learn to see the world - and even himself - through her eyes...

I loved this story, i was glued, as all of jodi's books
I recommend this one
Having read all of Jodi's books, this is in my top 5! Very different but interesting and although a bit more hard work than her other books, I thought it was worth the effort and enjoyed it.
Being a huge jodi piccult fan I first brought this book 3 years ago while on holiday in the usa, I had to get it as all of her other books have been brilliant and im not able to put them down once I start. However I found this book quite hardwork, and never made it to the end. I Found it moved around between charcaters too quickly and I ended up flicking through the book to refresh myself as to who was who. I may give it another chance and try reading it again. But all of her other works are fantastic and would recommend them all.
I bought this book as soon as it came out because i love Jodi Picoults books - she is my favourite author by a mile. However, this book is such hard work i haven't even made it half way through. I have to make myself read it even though i don't really want to - its a case of i have started so i will finish! This was her first book (so i believe) and im very glad she changed her style for all her other books. Its written well but i have found myself re-reading parts of it because of the structure. At some points i have had no idea of what is going on. I would advise anybody who hasn't read a Jodi Picoult book to avoid this one and pick any of her others - especially My Sister's Keeper. Looking forward to her new book out in 2009 though.
