.......not great. What I don't like about this book is that it is just a series of letters from Dawn French to friends and family talking about the past. I know that a biography basically is that, but presented in this way does mean that it gets very tedious and after a couple of hundred pages you may find yourself wanting the book to end as I did. I am not saying it is a bad book, there are some funny and touching moments in it, however you don't really feel in touch with the author as you do with other biographies. I was also surprised that she didn't talk more about things like Vicar of Dibley. Personally I would have liked to hear about the other cast members, what went on, what they thought of each other, the fun etc. It was hardly mentioned which for me was disappointing as I am a big fan. As I have said this is not a bad book and it does give you an insight into her life but I can't help feeling that it could have been so much better and made much more appealing to the reader had it not just been page after page of letters to people.

I bought this book for myself and have read it in no time because it is so fantastically funny. One tip do not read this book whilst on public transport as you will make a fool of yourself. It will have you laughing out loud - people will stare!! It is worth it though as it is such a good book. Amazing insight into her life and the challenges she must face in the public eye. Raw at times, truthful and very humerous in a typical dawn french way. I would highly recommend this book. A joy to read.

I had really looked forward to reading Dawn's book and found it to be a 'mixed bag' of funny, touching but also disappointing letters. Disappointing - Madonna Letters - boring, boyfriend David went on a bit . I was also hoping for more about Vicar of Dibley as this was such a long running series. It would have been nice if the photos could have been at the start of each letter as I found myself going back and forth trying to find the photos of people she wrote about. I was touched by the accounts of her IVF, her relationship with her Dad and she made me laugh out loud at some of her stories. It took me a long time to get into this book and although I expected more, overall it is worth reading.

Customer rating: 3 out of 5 stars Disappointing tbh

I have loved Dawn French since her earliest days with Jennifer Saunders on the Tube, and I looked forward to this autobiography. However it is one of those books which leave one with a lower opinion of one's icon after reading. It was a little ingratiating and self congratulatory almost defensive at times and yet gave us little real insight beyond what is mostly common knowledge anyway. It wasn't hilariously funny - it's easy to be blinded by our love for this national treasure which indeed she is and I do hope she doesn't disappear from our screens as has been rumoured, but this book is not comedic on that level, but I never expected it or wanted it to be. It will be a best seller because of who the author is but frankly it is not up to her best standard and doesn't deserve the accolades it is currently recieving.

Customer rating: 2 out of 5 stars Disappointing

Well I was so excited about reading this book, however I was truly disappointed. Although there were some touching stories of her life, I did expect there to be more about her life and times 'in the business' and include some stories about 'Vicar of Dibley' in particular. I skipped all of the letters to Madonna as I found these boring. I am glad that I read this book but now it will gather dust on my bookcase as I doubt I shall look at it again.

It really annoys and kind of upsets me to admit this, but I was quite disappointed with this book. Even though I admire Dawn French very much, I felt that this book wasn't the best written, and the funny parts were quite predictable, so unfortunatley not so funny. Bearing in mind though that i do tend to read a lot of comedy books, so i would be used to this type of writing.
Having said that though, I was expecting more. It took me a while to finish too, as I found myself not wanting to read any more of it. Even my Mum, who is a big autobiography and lots of other books - reader claimed it was hard to get through, and not what she expected.
However, even though i felt as though i had to soldier on to the end, the content of the book is extremely good, and she provides you with some real heart-warming stories, which you can't help but feel admiration for. Worth a read, i guess, for her tales.
I hope she does write another, because i would like to be pleasantly suprised.
