Not to labour my review with excessive glorification, but this is an outstanding book. I had read Armageddon recently and immediately picked this up due to its companion piece status, not to mention the quality of the previous book. Have read a good deal in the zone of WWII but was not extremely well briefed on the south pacific war. This is a furiously visceral account of all the important elements - as mentioned above, MacArthur's campaigns, the air force, the navy (its Marines), a submarine chapter is also included, the many and varied battles, and the final flights into Japan, etc, etc.

Thoroughly enjoyed the sections on China and Manchuria (having absolutely zero knowledge previously) but found particular interest in the multitudes of pages given over to reality of war for its soldiers; in comprehensive sections based on eye witness accounts.

Hastings writings overall follow the same pattern, a chapter describes a high level strategy of the generals, followed by the reality of this strategy played out in the field or sea or air, which is in turn followed by the accounts of its average personnel. Brilliant history - very much recommended.
