Dexter Morgan isn't exactly the kind of man you'd bring home to your mum. At heart, he's the perfect gentleman: he has a shy girlfriend, and seems to lead a quiet, normal life bordering on the mundane. Despite the fact that he can't stand the sight of blood, he works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But Dexter also has a secret hobby: he is an accomplished serial killer. So far, he's killed 36 people and has never been caught because he knows exactly how to hide the evidence. And while that may lead some people to assume he's not such a nice guy, he tempers his insatiable hunger for brutality by only killing the bad guys. However, Dexter's well-organised life is suddenly disrupted when a second, much more visible serial killer appears in Miami. Intrigued that the other killer favours a style similar to his own, Dexter soon realises that the mysterious new arrival is not simply invading his turf but offering him a direct invitation to 'come out and play'...

Some reviews have been saying that the books will disappoint those who enjoyed the TV series, on the contrary; I find this doesn't make one bit of difference. Awesome books, all of them (I cannot wait for the 4th to come out). I bought this book out of pure admiration for the series, and I was not disappointed.

The writing style is very easy to read, there are a few sly jokes dotted around everywhere and its remarkable how real the story feels.

As said in the title, a phnomenal take on a classic writing subject.

Fantastic book. I read this before watching the television series and found no comparison. The book was far better then the series. I found the TV series dragged what could have been a 6 episode series across 12 whilst adding many superfluous elements. For a much more enjoyable experience read the book.

As a big fan of the TV series, I had to get this book as previous reviewers rated it highly.
The one thing this book did was make me appreciate the skill and ability of the TV series script writers. Their characters are far better developed and involved. Their stories have more twists and turns and they convey humour in Dexter and he becomes almost a likeable 'human'.
The basic story is there, the characters are there, though most get little more than a mention. The majority of the book is consumed in the Dexter/ Dark passenger mental mitherings which I found did not help the book along at all and became pretty tedious.
Had I not seen the TV series, I wouldn't have read this to the end. You will miss nothing by not reading this.
