Darkly Dreaming Dexter | Paperback

Entertaining comes to mind when I think of a word to describe this book. I absolutely LOVE the TV series and that's why I decided to start reading the books. However, they are different in many ways.

First of all, this book and the first season of Dexter on Tv both follow the same direction, but have completely different endings. When reviewing this book I have to look at it as if I've never seen the TV series because if I do then I would be disappointed. Because quite frankly, the TV series is much, much better. But don't let that put you off.

The book is still fun to read; 'entertaining' as I put it. Forgetting the TV series this book takes you through the mind of Dexter the serial killer who only kill sbad people, but in fact he hardly kills anyone in this book. Maybe two or three. But it's the happenings leading up to them, and the aftermaths of them which make it a good book and story.

I think the writing was ok but like somene else said it could have been a little longer and a bit more descriptive. But I've got no complaints there really, I'm just nit picking.

I'll be honest, I dislike the ending, but I've still bought the second book so I will see where we go from here. The book is confusing in places and goes down some wrong paths, but it's still Dexter and still worth it.

I highly recommend the TV series and this book.

Love this book, got totally addicted and bought the second one yesterday. The only problem is that it is too undescriptive at times, which can be disappointing but other than that its an amazing book!

After watching the TV Series of this book and loving it I decided to try the book and wasquite surprised.

This is book is very enjoyable all the way though. There was never a day when I didn't read a page and I managed to finish it in under 5 days as sadly it's very short.
Dexter really is a very good and different character to the usual heros. I have no doubt that you'll love him by the end of the book.

But, this book doesn't explain much very well. There's loads of plot holes and some things make absolutly no sence. I think if the book had been a bit bigger it may have been a bit better.
Not that I'm telling you to stay away from it. Just be warned that it's not as good as the TV Show which is funny as usually it's the other way around.

An interesting book which was the inspiration for a hit television series.

The book itself is well written and keeps the reader interested. I actually saw the television series before I read the book, and found there were enough differences to keep even me interested. Though the writing was good and the plot very inventive, I found some of the mechanisms for advancing the story to be unrewarding and misplaced. More of a lean to the paranormal than the television series, which I found a bit weak.

Personally, I enjoyed the television series more than the book, which I would give 4 to 5 stars, the book i would probably give 3.5 stars.

If you like the tv series, you should like this, it's not the same as the tv series though so be warned as Jeff Lindsay takes a different route with Dexter, in this book much is the same initially as in the tv series but by the end several different twists have happened (I won't spoil though) as fascinating as the much applauded tv series but not quite as thouroughly expressed, and this is in the shade compared to the performance put in by Michael C.Hall, good series with some moral complexes you won't find elsewhere

I don't care if he is a serial killer - I love him!! This plot is pure genius and i can't wait to read the rest of them! (or watch the series ;D )

p.s. Dexter by Design looks particularly interesting

Dexter would be every girls desire if it wasnt for his extra curricular activities. He is the perfect man except he is also a murderer. You come to love dexter and anticipate his quests as he chooses only those who deserve it the 'harry way' some of the worst criminals are faced with a serial killer who amusingly hates blood in good old vigilante justice. He manages to kill alongside helping his sister deborah who is a police officer solves crimes. An enthralling series i cant put these books down

If you watched the series, you should definitely read the books. It's always good to make a comparison and there is a lot to be compared. Both are brilliant, of course, and the plot is ... around the same, but it's different in places. I won't give anything away, but the ending is different to the first series and the 'Ice Truck Killer' isn't actually called that - they don't give him a pet name, shame.

Even if you haven't watched the series, read it.

Dexter's wit and charm and descriptive narration is gripping. You won't be able to put it down, I promise!

These books are brilliant. They combine the darkness of murder with humour = creating a truely sparkling gruesome character Dexter.

The sequals are equally good leaving me on the edge of my seat, racing through the pages to the end of the book.

This is one of the best fiction crime books i have read in a long time, the plot is intelligent and the humour dark but still makes you laugh- and then feel bad for laughing. Really well written and a book that will keep you awake at night as you wont be able to stop until you have finished reading it
