A really good read, a bit of a British American Psycho i thought. Really harsh in places but it will make you laugh and then feel guilty for about a minute
I think I read this book quicker than any other, and was utterly engrossed the whole way through.
Stelfox's character is warped yet wonderful, foul yet funny, and lives through months of sex, drugs, vile thoughts and outbursts, taking advantage of those around him, abusing anything and anyone possible, and generally forcing his way to the top of the Music Industry.
I defy anyone to read ths book and not be completely engaged and captivated by it. A wonderful read.
Kill Your Friends had been on my Birthday & Christmas lists for ages until a friend finally bought me it at Christmas - and damn was it worth the wait. John Niven has created a vile, disgusting, sick individual - but I loved him! Steven Stelfox was captivating, and was the sole reason to keep turning page after page. When you hear the phrase "sex, drugs and rock & roll", it's never been more apt than as a perfect description of what this book is about. Yes, there were some OTT parts, some that made me squirm, or even feel a bit sick. And although it felt a bit weird saying I liked it, I haven't stopped raving about it to people. John Niven is a fantastic author and with this book you can see why he left working in the music industry to do what he is clearly amazing at. If you can handle it, I'd highly recommend this book (and either of his others!)
For a start this is one of, if not the funniest book I have ever read. Amereican Physco contains little or NO humor and to compare the two is just totally incomprehensible. The only similarity is that there are muders in both books.
This is as much about the music industry as anything.
It's wonderfully harsh and sweary and will have you sympathising wth a totally unlikable lead character.
Two words - Awe Some!
The characters hillarious rants and cynical views on life are what makes this book. The fascinating journey you go on with the main character will invoke emotions of envy, fear, disgust and contentment. You will enjoy this book if you have an interest in the music industry / enjoy anecdotes of sinful behaviour / have a slightly warped sense of humour and view of the world; all of the above being true to me...I loved it.
This is the funniest book I have ever read. The main character is delightfully sick, prejudiced, sexist and completely amoral. The story races along at a great tilt and is suffused with outrageous ramblings on all manner of subjects. The terminology used is hilarious in a hugely non-pc way. This book is not for the faint-of-heart, but "the lads" will love it.
I work in the music industry and this book is horribly accurate. I think most of us recognise people within the pages - and not in a good way!
At times, the descriptions of Stefox's crazed violence is almost too much to stomach but as hard as it is to read, the book is a compulsive page turner.
One of the best reads I've had in ages - bought several copies as Xmas pressies this year too.
for a quick fun read ,this is a great book . Read in one sitting and found enjoyable , though slightly disapointed with the ending. Not in trainspoting class, but made me lol a couple of times.
John Niven obviously set out to create a book and character similar to American Psycho and Patrick Bateman, this is the mian reason I bought this because I enjoyed American Psycho but this just isn't as good. The story is rather boring and not anywhee as interesting as American Psycho.
If you're looking as this book and thinking about buying, DON'T, get American Psycho instead.
