Beneath the majestic towers of the Alhambra, Granada's cobbled streets resonate with music and secrets. Sonia Cameron knows nothing of the city's shocking past; she is here to dance. But in a quiet cafe, a chance conversation and an intriguing collection of old photographs draw her into the extraordinary tale of Spain's devastating civil war. Seventy years earlier, the cafe is home to the close-knit Ramirez family. In 1936, an army coup led by Franco shatters the country's fragile peace, and in the heart of Granada the family witnesses the worst atrocities of conflict. Divided by politics and tragedy, everyone must take a side, fighting a personal battle as Spain rips itself apart.

A dull read. Very disappointing. The Island was a fantastic novel, however this storyline relies too heavily on the formula of its predecessor.
Really good read. Educates about the Spanish civil war, and makes it interesting. Also involves a family, and their struggle.A great story line. Loved every line.
This was a book I found hard to put down. I live in Spain not so far from Granada. The descriptions of present day life were accurate and beautifully written.
Through reading this book I came to know and understand more about the Civil War and about Lorca (in honour of whom our dog is named.)
I can't recommend this book highly enough. Read with an open mind and please don't compare with Victoria's previous work. It's different.
I read this book after reading the Island and loving it. It is different to the Island but once again told a fantastic story based on historical research. I found it interesting from a historical point of view but also very moving. A great read.
Anyone who loves spain should read this, you find yourself lost in the Spain of the past, the emotions of the people involved are laid bare and the atmosphere that is conjoured up is almost tangible.
The passion of the flamenco is conveyed throughout and the inner strength of innocent people caught up in this awful war is explained in such a way that you feel that you are there. Even when it is brought up to date in the present day you still appreciate the emotions.
A fantastic read!
