Written in the hallmark visceral style of "A Million Little Pieces", "My Friend Leonard" is a mesmerising insight into a friendship built in an astonishing underworld. "My Friend Leonard" is the story of an extraordinary friendship formed in the most unlikely of circumstances. When James Frey first meets Leonard in the rehabilitation centre so powerfully described in "A Million Little Pieces" they are both recovering drug addicts. Despite their highly unreliable track records their shared grit and humour sparks a mutual admiration which quickly transforms into firm loyalty. Leonard himself is charismatic and contradictory; at once a magnetic father-figure and a shady mafia boss. When he leaves rehabilitation it is to return to this dubious yet prosperous life in the criminal underworld of Las Vegas. In contrast, when James leaves the centre his world seems set to implode. Unsure where to turn, James calls Leonard and he answers. Paradoxically, it is in Leonard's lawless underworld that James discovers the courage and humanity needed to rebuild his life.

I feel the fact frey embellished his experiences for the purpose of the book does not take away from the genius of this book, and the one before it
It is just as gripping, well written and thought provoking as the first

 Another great book.

I wasnt so sure that i would be as gripped by this book as i was by A milion little pieces but i was just as much so. A great follow up showing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel although the book made me laugh and cry its a feel good book. Kinda sad when i finished it as i was so into it!

I haven't read a book since I left school some time ago, a friend introduced me to James Frey "million little pieces" this book is everything you want from a book emotional inspiring and honest. Anybody who is looking for inspiration should read this book. My review is an injustice as this book is amazing..

sequel to 'a million little pieces'....

| | See all srn1891's reviews (34)

This is the continuing autobiographical account of the author's life following his release from an american jail. He is 'clean' from drugs and alcohol'. Jame's frailty and fragility upon release is very tangible and his strength is sorely tested within 24 hours following his release. The subsequent challenges he face are multifaceted and he gains help and support from one particular person..'Leonard'. The 'assumed' relationship of 'father and son' is ultimately very poignant; albeit somewhat 'sugarcoated' at times.
This book, whilst it can be read in it's own right, is better appreciated if read as a sequel to its predecessor 'A million little pieces'.

 Unique style...

The writing style of this book and its predecessor are quite unique. I agreed with all of the comments posted initially but one or two points didn't add up so I looked up Mr Frey and found 'the smoking gun' website... the article is entitled 'a million little lies'...
Quite a let-down really as both books really impressed me. To then find out the author has a penchant for bending the truth was very disappointing.
Frey still stands as a good writer and his new book is out soon I believe - in the fiction section.
