It is the 31st millennium. The forces of humanity have reached the stars. Under the benevolent leadership of the Immortal Emperor and his superhuman sons, the primarchs, the Imperium of Man has stretched out across the galaxy. It is a golden age of discovery and conquest. But now, on the eve of victory, the Emperor leaves the front lines, entrusting the great crusade to his favourite son, Horus. Promoted to Warmaster, can the idealistic Horus carry the Emperor's grand plan? Worse still, this promotion has sown discontent amongst his brothers. How long before this escalates into all-out mutiny?

Horus Rising is the first chapter in the epic tale of the Horus Heresy, a galactic civil war that threatened to bring about the extinction of humanity.

Being a Warhammer 40000 collector i loved this book I always knew the main jist of Horus' fall to the dark powers but this book blew the whole thing open. Sheer brilliance. Even if your not a Warhammer fan it is still an amazing read, for instance i gave it my brother who has never been into 40K but he nailed the book in 2 days. Keep them coming...but remember Suffer Not The Heretic To Live!!!!

the start of something wonderously dark and captivating

This was my second warhammer book that i picked up after Eisenhorn, which didnt hold much sway over me with the 40k universe until i read this, the start of something great, i have to admit its more of a mans or boys book, with the big space marines, big guns and bigger battles, the intrigue from the plotting right from the start, the good, the bad and i think theres more than a few ugly in the series, but thats not to say girls wouldnt like this though, as once you start reading this book your hooked, it has you firmly in its grip and you dont want it to let go, most people say how many pages they read in one day but i honestly cant say as i completely lost track of time with this so i've no idea but its a large amount of the book seeing as i read it within a few days. so if your a fan of mr abnett from his other books or you play the tabletop game and want to know a bit more of the lore/history, or even if you just like big battles in space and on ground then give this a try, you will know if you dont like after the first few chapters because this starts off at rollercoaster speed and doesnt stop till the end so enjoy the ride, unless you dont like that kind of thing try harry potter instead :P

The beginning of the Horus Heresy

Top 100 Books Reviewer

At the beginning of the beloved Warhammer 40,000 storyline, when Humanity raises again after an age of strife, to reach out to the stars and claim the galaxy. Sound familiar? Not like this.

Horus Rising is the first novel in the Horus Heresy series, a set of novels portraying the events of a calamitous and great event within the model games storyline, and this beginning novel is beautifully written by the exceptionally skilled and capable Dan Abnett, my personal favourite Black Library author.

With massive battles, intricate philosophy, and masses of perspective, Horus Rising is a magnificent beginning novel to this exceptional science fiction series. A worthy read for any science fiction or warhammer 40,000 fan.

Firstly, I am not a fan of painting tiny miniatures and rolling dice along a table but I am aware of the whole GW universe. Being a fan of fantasy and sci-fi the background appeals to me, and if there were ever something that could be brought to film that might rival the Rings Trilogy, then the Horus Heresy would be it.

The background has it all; mighty and noble uber-warriors, evil and betrayal aplenty. Epic battles and noble warriors corrupted by evil.

The background of GW has always painted Horus and his followers as simply pure evil, but these books attempt to show that his actions, however misguided, were in his opinion the right course. This is all in all a good start to the Horus Heresy series and maybe just maybe a live action GW movie could appear someday. Hopefully based on these very books
