The Contented Little Baby Book, based on Gina Ford's personal experience of caring for over 300 babies, was first published in 1999. It quickly established Gina as an influential new authority on baby and childcare issues and has remained one of the bestselling parenting books in the UK. This completely revised edition of The New Contented Little Baby Book contains the most up-to-date advice available to parents. Using the feedback from numerous readers and website members, Gina has been able to develop and elaborate on the information in her first book, while clearly setting out her philosophy on simple feeding and sleeping routines. By creating routines that match a growing baby's innate natural rhythms, Gina prevents the hunger, overtiredness and colic that can lead to excessive crying. Babies who are settled into Gina's gentle routines are happy and contented because their needs for food and sleep are appropriately met and they should sleep for their longest spell at night from an early age. With detailed, prescriptive information on everything parents need to know, this book includes chapters on: - Preparation for the birth - How the routines evolved and the benefits of following a routine - Milk feeding in the first year - Understanding your baby's sleep - Establishing a routine - Introducing solid food in line with government and World Health Authority guidelines - Common problems in the first year. Whether you are expecting your first child, or are experiencing difficulties with an older baby, this comprehensive guide contains all the expert guidance you need to help your baby feed and sleep well.

Top 100 Books Reviewer

I'm not sure if this book is controversial or not - it certainly gets a lot of mums and mums to be heated up and angry!! others are really quite passionate about it and don't believe their lives would be anywhere near as good without it!! I am 26 weeks pregnany whilst writing this review and have the CLB book from cover to cover - now I am partly frightened but very much clued up!! I don't know whether I will follow Gina Fords rules to a tee - purely because I don't think personally I am able to be THAT organised, however her ideas of bedtime and sleeping through and nursing etc are brilliant - the woman is a genius and is only telling us old fashioned remedies from way back when!! none of this new aged crap where you bargain with children and let them run then RUIN your life, its just common sense, routine makes for a contented child, children need sleep!! the only time she seriously worried me is when she said I should open the curtains at 7.15 and have a piece of toast at 8.15 etc - but they are only guidelines and reminders!! no your baby doesn't read this book and its generally the babies that make the rules, but this book will help you get the baby settled and in a routine as quick as 8 weeks old - I am game if it gives me several hours of sleep back at night!!!

 Excellent read

I was given this book by a friend and thought right i'm going to do it word for word well that lasted 1 day it said what time to get baby up 7am every morning (so not getting up that early every day if at all) Although it has really good feeding times. I decided to only take bit's from it like feeding times and 7pm bed times and dream feed times. this worked great and now my baby has last feed at 10pm and sleeps till 8am Fantastic!!
Putting baby down to sleep for 2hr worked well too as thats now time for me and house work. If we are out when he's due his sleep time he just sleeps in his pram it's great.
Great book but again only take bits from it so that you have a life...

 Relief!

As a first time parent, the book gives so much support - not knowing what to expect, but having it all written down is fantastic! It's almost like getting a set of instructions for the baby!

 Fantastic

I followed this book and I feel it's totally amazing. If you want to have a structured routine for your baby then this is the book for you.
My daughter was sleeping through the night from an early age and just thrives on the structure. All my friends and family thought I was mad and a control freak because of fixed times for everything, but it was worth it as my daughter is very happy. I followed the book very closely but its worth reading even if you only use some of structure.

 Very worth while read

I brought this book and read it during my pregnancy, my daughter is now nearly a year old and l have found this book really useful - you can pick things from it such as the routines and leave other bits which you do not like. Take a commons sense approach to this book and it will be so useful.
I am now going to buy 'the toddler years' by Gina Ford.
