As a fan of the Republic Commando game, the book series immediately engaged my interest, and I'm not normally a reader but I decided to take it up. And I found that Triple Zero is a fantastic follow up to Hard Contact. For Star Wars fans looking for an alternative story of the clone wars instead of the animated Clone Wars series following the stories of the Jedi Generals, this is just what you're looking for.
The Clones like the Droids in the wars were regarded as expendable, but Triple Zero elaborates on the facts that they are real flesh and blood, have real emotions, needs and desires. Being in a world where they were just surviving, the Clone Commandos (in this story, Clone Commando Squads, Delta and Omega) they had no real desires outside of their bloody lives. It's this elaboration of the clone's exposure to daily life is what really gives this story the edge, the tension building up between the clone squads due to a dark past and having to settle differences aside for this mission.
This doesn't mean the action has let up, there are some brilliantly described shoot-outs and the imgagery used gives you a crystal clear picture in your mind about the setting. It's obvious the author didn't want to leave anything to chance when describing the setting, the mood, the atmosphere, right down to the current speakers facial expression and its implicatons.
For a fan of the Republic Commando game fan, this is partly and uber nostalgia fest; many of the weapons and species, and characters that appear in the game appear in Triple Zero. But that doesn't mean the story is spoiled if you have played the game start-finish, the events that transpired in Triple Zero happen in between events in the Republic Commando Game.
Overall, Triple Zero is very moving, gripping and has got Star Wars written all over. Very immersive, I found myself reading for about five hours straight as I neared the end. If you are a Star Wars fan there is no reason why you shouldn't get this and the rest of the Republic Commando series.
