A novel made up of stories: twenty-three of them to be precise. These stories were told by the people who have answered the ad headlined 'Artists Retreat: Abandon your life for three months'.

Innovative and interesting but hard work at times.

I dont know thats its possible to "enjoy" a book like Haunted. Its certainly to be applauded for its ambition and its daring structure. However the stories told inside are so relentlessly depraved that its hard to connect with, this isnt helped by the cardboard cut-out characters, all of them interchangeable , all acting in the same way with no individualism.
Original structure aside I dont think Haunted stands up without its gore and shock value. I would equate it to movies like "Saw" and "Hostel", loads of cringing moments but not a lot holding it together.

Palahniuk's Most Varied Account of Depravity.

Haunted, a novel comprised of stories and poetry. Amongst Palahniuk's work it is utterly unique. Utilising the short story form the author is able to bring his typically bleak outlook to far more subjects than ever before. Here are stories of teenage escapades gone wrong, the just deserts of food critics, the narcissistic home made porno world, arrogant anthropologists, perverted sex crime detectives, and selfish journalists. Each story acts as a backbone to the main plot, which concerns a group of self claimed writers and their continuing obsession to make their own pain more important, their own suffering more significant. This is not the story of one outcast, it is a story of a group of 'ordinary' people.

Palahniuk's gift is seeing the world they way it is. Somewhere among the perversion, the sadism, and the hate is a portrait of our world too terrifying accurate that it needs to be disguised as a horror tale. It is a grotesque novel of the highest standard, it may well put you off eating for a while, but what's worse is the never it strikes over and over. We love to hate, and Haunted shows us why.

 Best book I've ever read.

This book is crazy. Its a book of short stories - Grusome tales that make you laugh out loud. If you thought Fight Club was any good then you'll love this.
