Epic. A word, succinctly put, that fits this bloody tome perfectly. A great sweeping tale spread over 30 years with enough blood to re-float the titanic and with enough wit and smarts to make Stephen Hawking a bit of dim bulb. What a great book, one of the very best i have ever read. A must read.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars A modern epic!

I am an avid reader and enthusiast of the criminal genre, and they don't get much better than The Power of the Dog - having said that, this is by no means an easy read. It took me three tackles to eventually best this monolithic slab of a book.

So the first thing that you should note about The Power of the Dog is that you should not even attempt to begin reading it if you don't intend on spending a few long and quite sleepless weeks on it.

With that being said, if you enjoy the kind of books that completely immerse you within their chosen universe, then you will love this book and the story it intricately weaves through the perspectives of several inspiringly written characters.

I usually only ever feel this immersed in books that create their own world for the reader to explore - which is primarily fantasy and science fiction - but Winslow's gritty portrayal of crime in the recent century is so detailed, gripping and realistically brutal that it almost does seem like a different world.

You will explore the violent and cutthroat underworld of Central America and the equally verocious setting of Mafia-ridden New York in the 80s, and witness the carnage that occurs when two worlds collide as well as the spiral of one good man fighting against the odds in a world that really does hit home with the fact that sometimes the bad guys do win.

Wow, a great big story, with fantastic characters weaved together skillfully over time. As the characters lives change and become intwined and finally climax, with a satisfying ending.
Sometimes brutal, the story is about the dealing of hardcore drugs at all levels and the riches and violence that are associated with that lifestyle.
Better than the winter of frankie machine, which was excellent, longer too.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and may well read again soon.
