Continuing the outstanding success of "The Last Kingdom", "The Pale Horseman" is the second installment of Bernard Cornwell's fantastic series, following the fate of Alfred the Great, and the forging of Britain. It is the lowest time for the Saxons. Defeated comprehensively by the Vikings who now occupy most of England, Alfred and his very small group of surviving followers retreat to the trackless marshlands of Somerset. There, forced to move restlessly to escape betrayal or detection, using the marsh mists for cover, they travel by small boats from one island refuge to another, hoping that they can regroup and find some more strength and support. Only Uhtred remains resolute. Determined to discover the enemy's strategies, he draws once again on his Viking upbringing, and attempts to enter the Viking camps. His plan is to become accepted by their leaders, and to sit in their councils and uncover their plans. But once there, the attractions of his many friends among the Vikings coupled with his disillusion with the Saxons' leadership and anger at Alfred's criticism of his own conduct, draws him back again to his allegiance to the Vikings. "The Pale Horseman", an even more powerful and dramatic book than "The Last Kingdom", brings both Uhtred and the Saxons' dilemmas vividly to life.

Cornwell follows on from the Last Kingdom with another fantastic historical novel. Our hero Uhtred is a confused and reluctant Saxon saviour. Surrounded by men who do not appreciate him and in a world where he has more in common with his enemy than his fellow English, we follow him on his adventures. Being a Cornwell novel, you know the history will be as accurate as he can make it (with his usual twists of the truth) and full of love, enemies, friends and of course the battles. You feel really emersed in the historic period, and as always 'just one more chapter'.

 Fasinating & Entertaining

This novel is both accurate with history where certain events took place as well as extremely breath taking. Bernard Cornwell's masterpiece in my opinion, a great trilogy!

A gripping read, but then it is Bernard Cornwell!

The Last Kingdom was 'the' book that got me back into reading. Since then I have read other books but I keep coming back to Cornwell.

Quite a break for me from reading The Last Kingdom, but I started this book and within a chapter I had reacquainted myself with Uhtred. The Pale Horseman is the second book in this series and is gripping. I don't think it is Cornwell at his best, but it is still very good.

Currently reading The Lords of the North (3rd book)

 2nd in a good series

Following on where The Last Kingdom ended. this is a good story in typical Cornwell style. Smell the battles, feel the sword fights and get to know King Alfred a little more while following the narrator Uhtred on his adventures. Good stuff but read The Last Kingdom first.
