This is the third of a trilogy (Call The Midwife and The Shadow Of The Workhouse being the first two books) by Jennifer Worth.
I have rarely read a book that can have you in tears one minute, and then laughing your socks off the next! All three of Jennifer's book had me doing just that!
From heartbreaking tales of babies being delivered into single room homes devoid of heat, light and even food, to a fall of soot at a very inopportune time, not to mention flea infestations, twins married to one man and shoplifting nuns, this book has the lot! Sometimes requiring a strong stomach, as some of the tales of deliveries are shocking to say the least, and at other times showing that even in abject poverty many children lived wonderful lives in the close knit community of London's east End.
Make sure you buy this book, and the prequels! Fantastic read!
