Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) is an American ballet student, travelling to Germany to study at an exclusive dance academy in the Black Forest. After one of the students and her friend are hideously murdered in the first of Argento's breath-catching set-piece killings, Suzy discovers that the academy has a bizarre history and, as the body count rises, she gets involved in a hideous labyrinth of murder, black magic and madness.

The Philosopher's Stone of Modern Horror

Without Suspiria, 80s horror would have looked very different. Alongside Halloween, the film exerted a huge amount of influence due to it's stylish set piece kills, surreal plotting, colourful lighting and groundbreaking, terrifying electronic score, which went on to influence genre soundtrack composers even to this day.

Argento created a genuine classic not just of horror, but of cinema in general with his twisted tale of Ballet, murder and the Occult. Brutal kills are tempered by an artists eye for atmosphere and uneasiness, as a dance school is plagued by supernatural forces while the faculty members conspire to bring a great evil into the world.

Jessica Harper is an American student who washes up (almost literally given the ominous downpour that the film opens with) at the ill fated school only to fine herself in the middle of mysterious deaths and an even bigger supernatural terror that lurks unseen within the walls of her new home.

Everything about this movie is near perfect and it still has the ability to frighten a jaded horror fan like me, years after I first saw the film.

An essential purchase for horror fans and cinephiles.

While not as bad as the infamous Italian Blu the picture is not what fans were hoping for. Colour is still wildly off the those of US DVD but when the transfer is good it is very good and definition is generally excellent with fewer spots of digital damage than the Italian issue. Sound is absolutely excellent. Opening titles look like a digital recreation of the Italian ones. Extras aren't bad. Disc is locked to Region B. A disappointment but as good as you'll get on blu for the foreseeable future

Considering this film was made in 1977 it's very forward thinking and has allot of interesting ideas and visually intense stuff going on! This is certainly one of Dario Argento's most famously remembered films, the story is strange but plays out in a good and creepy way with a great cast of characters! The death scenes in the movie are very good and very bloody and very artistic all at the same time! The thing that makes the movie so intense though must be the soundtrack, very powerful and disturbing music and sound effects that creep out any scene in the film always giving a sense of dread! The transfer of the film is pretty good, there are still grainy scenes, but for the most part it looks great! If your into cult horror classics then this is well needed in the collection, it's an assault on the eyes a true piece of genre terror!!

Excellent blu ray of the most colourful horror film ever made. Dario Argento directed a landmark horror in this adult fairy tale. Colours of red, blue, green etc. stand out in almost every scene, detailing red for danger for example. Nouveaux/Cine-Excess have released a brilliant film on blu ray. My only snag...the featurettes should not of been windowboxed. Overall, a great blu ray dvd from the greatest horror director ever.
