From Terence Winter, Emmy Award-winning writer of The Sopranos, and Academy Award Winning Director Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire is set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States.

America in 1920. The Great War is over, Wall Street is about to boom and everything is for sale, even the World Series. It is a time of change when women are getting the vote, broadcast radio is introduced, and young people rule the world.

On the beach in southern New Jersey sits Atlantic City, a spectacular resort known as "The World's Playground," a place where rules don't apply. Massive hotels line its famous Boardwalk, along with nightclubs, amusement piers and entertainment to rival Broadway. For a few dollars, a working man can get away and live like a king - legally or illegally.

The undisputed ruler of Atlantic City is the town's Treasurer, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, (Steve Buscemi) a political fixer and backroom dealer who is equal parts politician and gangster and equally comfortable in either role. Because of its strategic location on the seaboard, the town is a hub of activity for rum-runners, minutes from Philadelphia, hours from New York City and less than a day's drive from Chicago. And Nucky Thompson takes full advantage.

Along with his brother Elias (Shea Whigham), the town's Sheriff, and a crew of Ward Bosses and local thugs, Nucky carves out a niche for himself as the man to see for any illegal alcohol. He is an equal opportunity gangster, doing business with Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), Big Jim Colosimo (Frank Crudele), Lucky Luciano, (Vincent Piazza) and Al Capone (Stephen Graham).

As the series begins, Nucky's former protégé and driver Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) returns home from the Great War, eager to get ahead and reclaim his rightful place in Nucky's organisation. But when Jimmy feels things aren't moving quickly enough, he takes matters into his own hands, forming a deadly alliance with some associates of Nucky's that set the Feds, led by Agent Van Alden (Michael Shannon) on his mentor's tail. Complicating matters further is Nucky's burgeoning relationship with Margaret Schroeder, (Kelly Macdonald) a local woman in an abusive marriage whom he tries to help out.

The show also stars Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) as Chalky White, the leader of the city's African-American community; Gretchen Mol as showgirl Gillian; Dabney Coleman as Nucky's mentor The Commodore; and Paz de la Huerta as Nucky's girlfriend Lucy.

Created by Terence Winter, Boardwalk Empire is executive produced by Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg. Gene Kelly is co-executive producer; Rudd Simmons is producer. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Jeremy Podeswa, Alan Taylor and Allen Coulter. The series is written by Terence Winter, Lawrence Konner, Howard Korder, Tim Van Patten, Paul Simms, Margaret Nagle, Steve Kornacki and Meg Jackson.

Boardwalk Empire is inspired by portions of the non-fiction book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City" by Nelson Johnson.

Amazing. Mad Men in the 1920s

This gritty potrayal of 1920s Atlantic City, in a time when alcohol was outlawed is brilliant. Its violent, and features strong sex and language so this show is one for the adults, although saying that I'm only 17 myself. It's a truley remarkable show, with an amazing cast and script. The icing on the cake is that the opening episode is directed by Oscar-winning director and living legend Martin Scorsese. This, along with Mad Men, is one of the best shows on television.

There is always going to be comparisons with the Soprano's what with both coming from HBO and written by Terence Winter. But what's the point of copying past glories? Boadwalk Empire is a totally different story from a different time. This is set at the dawn of prohibition as the story chronicles the life and times of Enock Nucky Thompson (excellent Steve Buscemi), the cities treasurer whose double role of polition and bootlegger makes him Atlantic Cities undisputed Czar of the time, but with the ban on booze it opens up a very lucrative set of opportunities for him and his "rum runners" and distributors. The story perfectly captures the time, the sets are amazing, the acting is fantastic and the story although slow to warm up really does flush out the characters with all their baggage, double crossing and other motivations and as the series moves on it opens up to the relentless Feds, rival gangsters including Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano and Al Capone. This 12 episode first season is some of the best TV I have seen in ages, It's not full of shoot-outs, but when the violence errupes it should satisfy those with the blood lust, but it's the interweaving story that shines through that's laced with some brilliantly dark comic moments, You must stay with this show to get the full benefit as it's a little known bit of American history that us on this side of the pond are not that familar with. All in all this is the set up of a much bigger story and leaves everything hangin in the balance for the much awaited Season 2.

 very good

the only bad thing about this is the fact that from the very start, the whole production team knew that they were going to get a second season so instead of a hugely explosive first season it just has a steady pace. the production, cast, direction, and writing are all superb. season two is even better!!

Mad Men in the 1920's with violence!

HBO's Gritty masterpiece that is Boardwalk Empire centers on 1920's Atlantic City during Prohibition when alcohol was outlawed and Atlantic City's very own corrupt treasurer Nucky Thompson, seeing the whole situation as one big business opportunity, begins working to tighten his firm grip on the city, but it also brings his attention to a bunch of violent rivals and FBI agents who will stop at knowing to in force the law and keep alcohol off the streets and out of peoples mouths.

Everything about this show is amazing, the writing in each episode, the acting from everyone, the highlight being Stephen Graham as Al Capone. The thing that made me really excited about this show was the fact that the one and only Michael Scorsese directed the very first episode of this masterpiece of a show.
