 The Cute and the Dark

Disney were going through a troubled period when they made this animated feature (Don Bluth had just walked out with half the animators to set up a rival studio, while the renaissance brought about by The Little Mermaid was still 8 years away). Truth is, while this is still a beautifully made film, and a vision to behold, it is very unsure of itself. The story is a very dark one as evidenced by its bleak, nearly silent opening, and while the titular characters get up to all the usual shenanigans as puppy and cub, things get a lot more serious when they grow up and become bitter rivals, to the point where the background comic interest feels completely inappropriate. Still, there is no doubting the quality of the craftsmanship which is a delight in itself.
