Raging Bull is arguably the finest work from the Scorsese and De Niro partnership. De Niro gives an amazing portrayal of a man whose animal side lurks just beneath the surface, ever ready to erupt. Vivid and unremitting in its uncompromising brutality and honesty, the fight sequences are famed for their realism.

Violent throughout, this film is a testament to Scorsese's and De Niro skills, creating a thoroughly absorbing film about such an unlikable character.

Renowned for throwing himself into the roles of the character, De Niro went on a diet to gain fifty pounds during the production for the role of the faded star.

 BRUTAL CLASSIC!!!

Based on the true story of boxer Jake La Motta, De Niro puts in his finest acting performance and deservedly won the Oscar for best actor. The fight scenes have brutal realism, and that's not just inside the ring. There are plenty of highs and lows with both his wife and brother (played the brilliant Joe Pesci). The whole film is in black and white and in my view it was a masterstroke as it seems like you are actually there. Scorcese/De Niro/Pesci, always a knockout combination!!!!

 'AN ALL-TIME CLASSIC'

the film is surely an all-time classic.
with an amazing portrayel of boxing legend 'jake la motta' by one of the screens finest actors 'robert de niro'
the film tells of the times of the 'colourful' character 'jake' following his rise through the ranks in the ring, the price he pays to his own self esteem by throwing a fight, his historic meetings in the ring with 'the great' 'sugar ray robinson'
his wayward life style, his moods, and his fall from grace.
this is without doubt a film was one of 'martin scorsese's' finest achievements. ( not really blu-ray quality ) never-the-less 'a must see'

 A towering achievement

One of the most important films of the 80s, if indeed American cinema in general, this is the film that Scorsese should have won the Oscar for. A visceral, pounding biopic of boxing champ and professional thug Jake la Motta, it's about a man who made a living beating the crap out of people in a boxing ring, but was as big a beast outside of it. De Niro gives a transformational, electrifying performance that is now the stuff of legend, but he's matched every step of the way by Pesci and Moriarty. That Scorsese manages to make the kind of man you'd normally cross the street to avoid both fascinating and sympathetic is testament to this extraordinary director's skill.

 DE NIRO IS LAMOTTA

| | See all tyronefordham's reviews (47)

robert de niro's incredibly dedicated performance dominates martin scorsese's monumental boxing biopic. jake lamotta, 1940's middleweight fighter, works his way to the top of his sport, but only by co-operating with the mob, which decides who gets a shot at the championship and when headstrong in the ring (refusing to hit the canvas), and a wife beating bully out of it, lamotta is eventually brought to his kness by his own jealousy and paranoia. de niro brought his usual dedication to the role, training with the real lamotta to get fit and then gaining 22.7 kg (50 lbs) to play lamotta as a bloated has been at the end of his career. shot in stark black and white, the fight scenes are among the most unflinchingly brutal to have been committed to film. the domestic abuse and sibling rivalries between boxing bouts are no less painful or compelling to watch. also putting in great performances are joe pesci and cathy moriarty as his brother and wife. the blu-ray quality is decent as well for a film made in 1980
