Jackie Brown (1997) is a crime drama starring Pam Grier, Samuel L Jackson, Robert Forster, Michael Keaton, Bridget Fonda and Robert De Niro.
After the success of Pulp Fiction Quentin Tarantino surprised many people with his next Jackie Brown, a quieter more grown up movie adapted from the Elmore Leonard book.
Jackie Brown and Death Proof are probably the least known of Tarantinos movies but thats a real shame as Jackie Brown is every bit as good as the more popular movies.
The cast are terrific. Grier gives a career best performance while Jackson brings effortless cool to a more sinister role. Robert De Niro is also on fine form delivering a performance far and away above the stuff he has done in recent years.
All the Tarantino trademarks are here. Cool music, witty diaglogue and a clever intertwined storyline. It may not be his most iconic or quotable movie but it is his most grown up and well crafted masterpeice.
I feel as Tarantino gets older his style may become less violent and grindhouse and more like Jackie Brown. Which is no bad thing.
