The Academy Award winning adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's violent, poetic and darkly funny crime novel No Country For Old Men sees The Coen Brothers produce their finest thriller to date. Set amongst the wild, empty, and imposing landscape of 1980s Texas, No Country For Old Men is a masterly tale of the good, the deranged, and the outright doomed.

Approaching retirement, Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is one of the last links to the history of Texas' Old West and the men who patrolled the frontiers of decency and lawlessness. These days, though, he feels less and less able to comprehend the new breed of violent criminals that have drifted into his jurisdiction. Violent men like Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem): an enigmatic, psychopathic, and obsessively compulsive killer who determines the fate of his victims with a quick flip of a coin. Chigurh, an ex-special-forces operative turned hit man, has been hired to track down two million dollars in cash taken from the scene of a drug-deal gone awry and whoever spirited it away. That man is Llewellyn Moss (Josh Brolin): a financially struggling hardened Vietnam veteran who stumbled upon the money and a substantial amount of heroin amongst a sea of bloody corpses and a bullet-strewn truck whilst hunting antelope in the desert near the Mexican border.

McCarthy's melancholic and muscular prose is a perfect match for the Coen brothers' unique brand of poker-faced irony. The narrative ellipses entwine with the Coens' modern noir nonchalance and dark humour to highlight and explore the similarities and differences of Moss, Chigurh, and Bell as they try to track one another down. With dark intelligence and an unstoppable array of sly wit, No Country For Old Men is reminiscent of Joel and Ethan Coen's early neo-noir motion picture Blood Simple and their much-lauded Academy Award winning Fargo and is a cat-and-mouse chase epic that engages and excites from beginning to end.

Empire once wrote "in a perfect world every movie would be made by the coen brothers". Now although they can miss on occasion "intolerable cruelty" and "the ladykillers" for example, it can't be denied that when they get it right it's near perfection.

Now this movie won't be to everyones taste i'll give you that but if you do get where the coen's are coming from you are going to love it and will definitely rate it as one of the best movies you have seen that year. The idea to not have music accompany the movie or to build tension was a bold move and is a great example of how the coen's are right at the top of their game when making this movie, letting the camera do the storytelling and to build the unbelievable tension.

The transfer onto blu-ray?..................................

Truely epic. One of the best i've seen. Everything is spot on with this transfer. No banding, artifacting, edge enhancement, crushing or compression issues. Near perfection with no evidence of the dreaded dnr. Filmic grain completely in-tact.

Incredible detail and sharpness. The colours are vibrant and flesh tones are real and natural looking. Roger deakins cinematography is captured beautifully on this disc.

This disc is reference quality.

Not much to say, it's a Classic, Great Story, Direction and Acting.
yes Javier Bardem is mesmorising, but Josh Brolin should have got a bit more recognition at the award functions, and Tommy Lee Jones seems to be on a upward swing with this and In the Valley of Elah along with the fantastic but not much talked about The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.
Watch NCFOM asap.

Brilliant film from the Coen brothers which is region free if you get it on playusa and i can confirm that it is!

Well acted film with plenty of twists that keeps the pace going throughout.

The blu-ray transfer delivers on all aspects. Crisp detailed picture, clear sound, great colour levels ( some intentional grain from the film maker) - step up from the dvd release which i can confirm as i have both .

Definite film of the year and worth your time and money.

 An Instant Classic

No Country For Old Men is a magnificent film and is one of the best and most highly original films to come out of Hollywood in years. This film well deserved the academy award for best picture. The film is amazing, Its just 2 hours of pure genius. This is by far the Coen brothers best film yet, and certainly reinstated them as among the best in Hollywood again.

The film has jaw dropping cinematography and is visual spectacular whilst being gritty and down to earth. The characters are well drawn out and Javier Bardem makes an awesome psychopath. And deserved the best actor award for that (easily). Tommy Lee Jones was fantastic too, like usual. All the performances were great.

This really is a triumph of modern day American cinema and i would recommend this film to anyone who likes the spaghetti westerns or 'There Will Be Blood', which admittedly is similar but the two should not be compared. as they are both great films. This is definitely worth every penny of the money and probably more! This WILL be an instant classic! And it looks great on Blu-ray.

5 star film (acting/cinematography/directing)
3 star product (average)
- More special features!!

But still 5 stars overall, just for the film.
