In The Duchess Keira Knightley will play the 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. An ancestor of Princess Diana, she lived an extravagant, profligate and promiscuous life of political and romantic intrigue, becoming an important powerbroker amid Britain's ruling elite but also running up catastrophic gambling debts. She was alternately feted and reviled, and widely caricatured by the popular press.

The Duchess (2008) is a drama about 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Keira Knightley stars with support from Ralph Fiennes, Charlotte Rampling and Dominic Cooper.

This movie serves to remind us that Keira Knightley is a very good actress. In this movie she is seductive, charismatic and compelling. Ralph Fiennes is far more restrained but gives a great performance elevating the movie and Knightley.

Director Saul Dibb (Bullet Boy) keeps the pace of the movie slow allowing the characters to develop. The cinematography is gorgeous and looks especially lush on blu-ray.

The Duchess is a quality piece of filmmaking with some top notch acting. It can be a little dull at times but don't let that put you off. A return to form for Knightley.

A simple story beautifully told whose contemporary royal parallels are well recognised - and bring a lump to the throat. Fabulous costumes, locations, cinematography, script, pacing and of course acting. Kiera Knightly and Ralph Fiennes are superlative with a top notch supporting cast. The picture is spot on with great close ups and very natural colours. The musical score is dynamic and rich without being overwhelming. There seemed little use of the surround channels but two occasions of deep base made the room rattle and were very satisfying! Perhaps the most important reason for this review is to highlight the brilliant use of silence, body language and lingering camera shots throughout this masterpiece. If only these techniques were used just a little in the fast comic book actioneers they would help develop characters, accentuate the plot and enhance the ensuing shootem ups. Directors please take note!
