The Rite is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the Devil's reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth.

Inspired by true events, the film follows seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), who is sent to study exorcism at the Vatican in spite of his own doubts about the controversial practice and even his own faith. Wearing his deep skepticism like armor, Michael challenges his superiors to look to psychiatry, rather than demons, in treating the possessed.

Only when he's sent to apprentice with the unorthodox Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) - a legendary priest who has performed thousands of exorcisms - does Michael's armor begin to fall. As he is drawn into a troubling case that seems to transcend even Father Lucas's skill, he begins to glimpse a phenomenon science can't explain or control... and an evil so violent and terrifying that it forces him to question everything he believes.

'micheal kovak' has doubts that his vocation was within the church,a priest see's potential in 'micheal' and suggests that he goes to 'rome' to learn of exorcism.
'micheal' is like many of us a sceptic, when introduced to father lucas who had performed many exorcisms down the years his doubts remained.
seeing 'father lucas' in action done little to change his views, however his mind was about to be changed.
down the years there have been many films that have attempted to bring the horror shown in the 70's film 'the exorcist' to the screen, most have failed, this film however based on true events does have it's moments and may get one or two sceptics wondering.

A film for the fans of Anthony Hopkins

I bought this film as my title describes. Reasonably well made but not to the expectations.
Absolutly delighted watching on Blu ray on my home cinema system.
A good thriller particularly if you are interested in the unknown being explained as known!!!

I first decided to watch this film a couple of days ago after attending a musical concert which, amongst other pieces, a suite from the soundtrack of The Rite was premiered to the public; a concert which both the composer of the soundtrack and Hopkins himself attended (awesome by the way!).
Needless to say, I was not disappointed. I've read some fairly 'so-so' professional reviews about this film, but I didn't find it mediocre at all. Of course, exorcism is arguably a tough film concept to keep fresh as time progresses. However, as per usual, Hopkins delivers a stellar performance as Father Lucas - convincingly portraying multiple faces of the character, keeping suspension and intrigue throughout the film
Great movie in my opinion!

I wasn't really sure about this, in the end I decided to order and try, just in case I would miss a good film if I didn't. And I am so glad I did! Anthony Hopkins has this role down to a tee, and his renown sinister underlying character is present in here also.

Basic story is a young guy going into the priesthood, mainly to please his father, and he plans to join, and then leave. But he is sent to Rome, so spend time learing about and assisting exorcisms.

Quite sceptical, and not really taking most of what he sees seriously, it's only when he sees and hears some things close to heart that he realises maybe there is something true in all of this.

The last 1/3 of the film is where it really gets quite tense.

It is not 'sit on the edge of your chair' the whole time, but it does have its moments, and even more so as the film progresses.

It's well worth a watch, and if you like horror, there is enough in here to make you happy!

 hopkins never fails to please

I was desperate to see this at the cinema but missed my oppourtunity so went for the blu-ray instead. As we all know the exorcist will never be beaten and many films have failed trying to copy it(the last exorcism, emily rose etc)however i was quite pleased with my purchase of this blu-ray. Obviously if you are looking at this film then you're a fan of this genre and you sort of know what to expect from a film like this,i was mostly impressed by anthony hopkins who as always played an excellent part, its got the usual 2 priests speaking latin to a possessed young girl etc as all these films do but hopkins and his laid back attitude really came across so well on screen during the exorcisms. I wont go into detail on what the films about as its in the product description BUT for the sake of 12.99 for a new release blu-ray and a good horror night in front of the tv id say "go for it" give it a watch,i would give 3 and a half stars if possible but due to hopkins acting skills ive rounded it up to four stars. Im not sure if its a film you could watch over and over but its certainly worth owning.
