In the dusty heat of the American southwest, innocent country boy Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar) is seduced by a beautiful girl (Jenny Wright) into joining a roving pack of vicious drifters, led by the enigmatic Jesse (Lance Henriksen, Terminator, Aliens). But this is no ordinary band of outlaws. Caleb is now trapped in a nightmare of soulless evil that waits in the shadows, hellish mayhem that thrives on blood; the horror that begins Near Dark.

Bill Paxton (Aliens) and Jenette Goldstein (Aliens) co-star in this extraordinary thriller, co-written and directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, Hurt Locker).

Forget the limp wristed Twilight & it`s like, this is the benchmark by which all vampire movies are measured. It`s a lean, mean, nasty piece of work without compromise for the squeamish & those who like their undead to be fashion conscious romantics.Led by Civil War veteran Jesse, a band of vicious drifters travel the back roads in a blacked out van in search of fresh meat to sustain their way of death. This stylish, original & ferociously violent movie shows them kill without mercy or remorse. Yet, when one of their own falls for a country boy, their existence begins to unravel in a nightmare of bloody carnage & horror. Near Dark is unequaled in it`s genre as THE stand alone classic. Terrifying, atmospheric, ultraviolent & effortlessly cool. Highly recommended.

 Great film....no extras...average transfer.

I just love this film and was delighted when I saw there was a blu ray version. As soon as it arrived it was in my son's PS3...was disappointed there were absolutely no extras. Appreciate it is a
very dark film set mainly at night so had to firstly increase brightness but still looks very grainy. In all honesty I think my region 1 version bought several years ago looks better. Anyway this is
still the best vampire movie around.

Great transfer...shame about the lack of extras.

Near Dark....one of the best vampire movies ever made. I have just watched this on Blu Ray and have to say, I am amazed how this film has NOT dated at all, still as good now as it was in 1987 and for a film made over 20 years ago, I thought the HD transfer was superb. I did not notice hardly any grain, what colour the film had, was bright and crisp, the outdoor scenes were sharp...quite simply, in my opinion the best this film has ever looked...better than the DVD that's for sure. Marked down only for the complete lack of extras, so if you have you have the 2 disc DVD set...keep it!

On it's release in October 1987 the film was over shadowed by The Lost Boys that was released a month before, but where The Lost Boys wone at the Box-office this Vampire flick only had a quick release and then ended up on Video quite rapidly.
The thing about Near Dark is that it may not have the crossover appeal of The Lost Boys but Near dark is a more stylish original take on the blood sucker, it may have had little impact at the box-office but excellent word of mouth have turned this film into a cult classic.
Not once is the "V" word mentioned and they suffer none of the supernatural trappings, the only thing these nomadic killers fear is sunlight.
I guess way back in 1987 the film was one step too far from the myth. The cast are excellent with Bill Paxton stealing every scene. Just check out the show stopping bar scene as it amuses as much as it repulses.
This should have been a five start review as the film holds up today after we have been bombarded with romantic teen friendly takes on the myth, but.... and it's a BIG but, where the hell are the extra's? the 2004 double disc edition had great extras, but on this there's nothing!
The Transfer to Blue Ray for a oldish film is very clean and the sound good.
This film deserves all the cult classic praise it's managed to gain over the years and can be held up in the top three Vampire films from the 80's along with Fright Night, and The Lost Boys.
The film deserves a special edition, so if you already own the two disc DVD edition I would save your money, if not then it's a must own for any vampire fan.
