Footloose (1984) (Blu-ray)

This is one brilliant film, I remember thinking after I saw this back in 84, they had captured movie magic. The story of Ren starting a new life in Bomont and challenging the laws against music and dancing is one of my favourite films period!
The music and the performances by Kevin Bacon, Chris Penn and John Lithgow are what make this film. They certainly captured the magic and made sure this will be a popular film for a long time to come with generations of fans singing it's praises.
This film deserved a decent Blu-Ray release and got one. The PQ and AQ is very good and is a massive step up from the DVD. Plus we get all the extra features from the SE DVD release from across the pond, for the first time here in the UK, plus a few brand new ones aswell. The previous UK DVD had no extra features at all. Great price at the moment. By the way if you haven't seen the remake do, you maybe pleasantly surprised.

It's amazing how fast 28 years and a remake goes by, but has the film aged?
Of course it has, Footloose was a film built around a soundtrack, but then again so was Flashdance and Top Gun and even to some extent Beverly Hills Cop, Footloose and the likes was a product of it's time. Now looking back on the original the films cracks do show, for a film about the Kids right to party at times it's plodding and althogh the film opens up with the classic Kenny Loggins theme with the iconic footwork there's very little dance in it, but Bacon is excellent, Lori Singer is a bit like her chest (Flat) and John Lithgow is as always excellent, even Chris Penn is outstanding as you'll have to do a double take as in this he's young and slim it's a shame as Chris Penn was a underrated actor before he ballooned, exploded and sadly died.
But it's the nostalgia you watch this blast from the past for, as back then there was no Internet, Mobile Phones, we all had Sony walkmans and most of us danced really badly as it seemed we either did the Bruce Springsteen's "Dancin in the Dark" dance moves or boddy popped! Check out Bacons frustration dance in the abandoned mill, it's dimly lit due to the fact that the back flipping, cartwheeling body double looks nothing like him. But it all adds to the charm. Footloose is a bubblegum movie, it's great fix of cheesy guilty pleasure. 2011 brought us the "actually it's pretty good!" sequel that ironed out most of the creaks and gave it a slicker face-lift, but where the remake was much slicker, the original 1984 movie still has more heart.
Only one thing niggles me and back in 1984 the film had a PG certificate as I was only 13 when I saw it, so why the Certificate 15?
