Mamma Mia the Movie is a fantastic tongue n' cheek musical set in an idyllic Greek Island starring Meryll Streep as Donna whose daughter Sophie(Amanda Seyfrield) comes across her mums' diary and decides to secretly invite three of her mother's ex-lovers to the Island to her wedding to find out who her real father is...Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard make their way to the Island unaware that the invite has come from the daughter..Queue Donna's friends....the hilarious Rosie(Julie Waters) and equally talented Tanya(Christine Barinski) and you have a unusual mixture of professionals who bond together(excuse the pun) with the music of Abba in a tongue n cheek way that is truely breathtaking....The comedy is well timed the scenery is sensational and the musical score will make you want to get up in the middle of the cinema and start toe tapping to the likes of Dancing Queen, Honey Honey, plus many many more phenomenal Abba songs...Streep has a great voice which carries the Abba songs very well indeed...Abba has lived beyond the 30 years plus since their Eurovision debut with the genius of Benny Anderson as well as Bjorn Ulvaeous...Mama Mia is a testament to this utter professionalism with a midas touch which comes very highly recommended as a Top Musical on screen Performance...If you do not come out singing the songs and tapping your feet and feeling good then I will be very surprised....cannot wait till I see the Blu-ray
I've now seen this 5 times since I bought the BD version of it. From the outset, it is done in a way that brings the Abba songs into the 21st century.
Everyone in the movie sings in a way that makes the movie greater; if you can watch this movie and not smile throughout then I simply don't understand you!!
Pierce Brosnan came in for some flack because he's not a perfect singer - well, do you know what? He has been coached to understand his range and I think he does a fantastic job.
There are two awesome scenes on jetties - again showing the humour behind the production. I could try to suggest that "Does your mamma know?" is the best scene/song in the movie but it's too hard - "Money Money Money" is brilliant, "Take a Chance" hilarious, ah, there are too many to mention.
I predict that this will be my most-watched BD disk ever.
Its evident very early on that the actors in this movie were picked more for their names that singing talents with the exception of Amanda Seyfried who plays Sophie. While some pull off very good jobs, step up Meryl Streep, some, no one actually is awful, step back Pierce Brosnan.
The picture transfer here isnt as good as it should be considering the picturesque island setting but is worthy of a 4/5. The sound is well 5/5 as all you are watching this for is to hear ABBA songs and probably sing along and this feature has probably the best closing credits in years.
The extras are ok considering and it would have been nice to have PiP commentary with most of the cast and not just a commentary with the director (do I smell a special edition in the future?) and the deleted song is nice but considering where it fit in the film was right to be cut.
If you hate Mama Mia this will not win you over, If you love it even Brosnans singing wont ruin it for you and if you're new it will make you want to check out the show which isnt a bad thing as it will always be superior to this version Im afraid.
PS I for one love it!
Please don't give this movie a poor review because you have an old blu-ray player or a sub standard amplifier. This blu-ray has an awesome dts-ma soundtrack and i had no problems playing this on a bd-55 or ps3 player. The picture was as good as the audio and looked tremendous on my [breitling] pioneer plasma [/breitling]. I gave this 5 stars based on the actual movie unlike some other reviewers. If you like abba then this is not to be missed.
I used to think it was sad going to the cinema twice to see the same film.....but i've now seen Mamma Mia 11 times and i'm planning my twelth visit. I've seriously got a problem with this film, i just can't stop watching it. It is pure escapism and full of sun (which we haven't seen much of this summer), happy people and the best Abba, timeless music. I just hope that the gap between it finishing at the cinema and it coming out on DVD isn't to long, i need my fix! Meryl Streep deserves an Oscar for her performance, especially when she sings 'the winner takes it all'. All the cast are fantastic....faultless, thank you for making summer 2008 bearable, i don't know how i would have survived without Mamma Mia!!
