A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another, if they want any chance of returning home.

 Give this film a chance!

I enjoyed this film and I think it should be given a chance. I have read quite severe criticism of the story line and the acting between Jaden and father Wil Smith, yet I think it is unfounded. The story line is unusual yet bounces along at a brisk pace and the special effects are very credible with some surprises. For me both the relationship between father and son (on screen) is pretty true to life and when Jaden has been 'bitten' by some toxin secreting leechy thing and loses his vision and says 'dad help me please' you can sense the vulnerableness of Jadens character and the desperation to help of Wil's of wanting to be there to help his son yet cannot. In all if you want a family sic-fi movie (note rated 12 years and over) that is easy to follow and has something a little different from the mainstream 'blast 'em to bits' sic-fi movies this could be for you.

Far from awful! The criticism of this film was unwarranted.

I've watched many types of films this year and After earth was one of my favourites. I really enjoyed it. I had high hopes for it and even though it wasn't an amazing film it was good. A little too short but good nonetheless. I loved the unique father and son dynamic. Jaden did a great job walking in his fathers footsteps. The criticism and hate of this film because of him is truly unfair. It's almost like people are criticising Jaden because they saw more of him and less of Will. The Kid did a great job. Give this movie a chance and I know you'll enjoy it.

 Not as bad as expected

OK, this isn't a fantastic film by any measure but it's actually not that dull or boring. Sure, the story is pretty unoriginal and the cold, dysfunctional relationship between father and son does seem a bit bizarre... as does Earth having recovered from Man's destructiveness! But it's a nice looking film with reasonable performances that steadily plods along at a reasonable pace. Worth a watch.

 Awful movie.

Even Will Smith, cannot save his son or the film. It's a sci-fi thriller, with terrible a father-son relationship. A confusing story line with Scientology references added in makes it painful to watch. Jaden's acting is terrible which just adds to the wasted 100 mins of my life I just lost.
