The epic drama set in the days of Julius Caesar, his brutal henchman Mark Antony, his cunning heir apparent Otavian, his conflicted friend Brutus, his ruthless niece Atia and his wrathful lover Sevilia. It is a tale for ages seen through the eyes of Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, two soldiers whose lives become inexorably tied to the fate of Rome itself. Think the Sopranos meets togas & you have the plot of Rome,as the great & bad of the world`s 1st great superpower grapple & murder eachother in their quest to get to the top of the political food chain. Graphic violence & sex are mixed in with a sharp, streetwise script & fast action. It`s history as it`s never been seen before, given life by a tremendous picture, showing ancient Rome in all it`s gaudy, morally corrupt & decadent splendour.Great acting, script & stellar production values make this the finest historical series made for years. It really has the lot & then some.

A stunning piece of history made in to a stunning piece of television. This is a fantastic slice of entertainment, from superb characters with complex relationships, to some stunning camera work capturing the beauty of Italy, this has it all.
You have probably heard this is a decent blu ray transfer, and it is, some great extras round off the package. You may notice that season 2 looks ever such a little sharper, but that will not matter, as both seasons are some of the best television you will ever see.
This is the way it was meant to be seen, shame it was too expensive to continue making, grab this if you love good television with high production values, its as good as The Wire and The Sopranos.

 Great stuff

Camp and colourful, this quality production grips the attention. It is a mix of Soap, Gladiator and BBC Historical drama style. The Italian participation ensures the colour and brio and British actors take their parts seriously and grim humour is mixed with guts and muck to carry a complex tale breezily along.

It doesn't take itself too seriously but manages to tell a reasonably accurate historical tale in a human way. Well worth the money and a pleasure visually as well, in great HD.

Looks and feels very high production with a good cast and intricate plots with constantly shifting loyalties and skullduggery. A brilliant insight into how the ancient Romans lived on every level. It's what TV was invented for, just outstanding.
