There are detectives and then there is Sherlock. This eagerly anticipated BBC series sees Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary creation updated for the 21st century. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman star as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson battling London's criminal masterminds.

John Watson (Martin Freeman), army doctor, invalided home from Afghanistan, alone and friendless ...

Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), the most brilliant intellect of his generation, alone and friendless ...

London 2010 - the best and longest friendship in all of fiction is about to begin anew. The most famous detective, the most baffling mysteries, the most thrilling adventures and the deadliest foes, are coming in out of the fog. Sherlock Holmes was always a modern man - it was the world that got old. Now he's back as he should be - edgy, contemporary, difficult, dangerous.

Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) is the best Scotland Yard has got, but he knows he's not as good as a strange young man called Sherlock ...

The world's favourite detective has come out of the fog.

I am writing this after broadcast of episode 2. I am 100% hooked.
This new take on the Sherlock Holmes tradition is both familiar and new with lovely little touches that actually reassures the viewer that this is a character they have know in some way all their lives.
This series could easily have been tacky and cheap - however, it shines with a well thought out and executed idea and you can see the dedication that the co creators, Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat, the producer, Sue Virtue and the directors have poured into it.
The two leads are just superb with the amazing talents of Benedict Cumberbatch playing the hero with depth and care - just amazing. This man could play Holmes in any era. Martin Freeman plays the modern Watson as you would like him to be - no flippancy or comedy here, just a guy whos been through the wars - literally.
Top notch performances.
There is also a marvelous and well delivered 'series theme' ... that of the ultimate villain and already the tension is built up for the appearance of Moriarty, and I cannot wait..!
Well written, paced, acted, filmed, and presented - this is a 21st Century police show with style and much better than any of its current police/detective counterparts. A true must have in your TV DVD/Blu ray collection. Stunning

Even if your're not a fan of sherlock holmes you will still love this. It's very funny and very cleverly done, Sherlock has skills similar to the mentalist and is very clever. Sherlock and Watson work brilliantly together and are so funny. I am definately going to buy this. Well done and I hope there's more to come.

 AMAZING!!!

I'm going to make this short and sweet......Sherlock is quite simply a new rare BBC television gem. brilliant writing, fantastic quirky acting.....I was hooked from the first episode! I must also mention the fantastic soundtrack and stunning videography! great use of the 'tilt / shift' technique often used that makes London look like a model toy town. I cannot wait to get this first series on Bluray!! and role on the next series after that final in episode 3 ;)))

It's simply elementary- Sherlock Reborn in the 21st Century

Top 100 Gadgets Reviewer

I began watching the 21st Century adventures of Sherlock Holmes after reading reviews in the press and after one episode- I was hooked. The casting is flawless: Benedict Cumberbatch is perfectly placed as the consulting detective with Martin Freeman as Dr.Watson who has massive respect despite Holmes' ecentricity.

The stories are well written as they are as clever as they make Sherlock out to be, I think the humour mixes in well with the writing and story arches and Cumberbatch has the best of the quips and the comeback lines in the first episode- a Study in Pink.

The second episode advances Holmes' abilities and character as a detective and just how quickly he is able to solve these mysteries.

The 3rd episode is the very best out of the 3 that were broadcast and it is a pulse racing experience that leaves the story on a cliff hanger.

I am looking forward to the next batch of episodes when they get produced as the BBC are onto a winner with this series and in my honest opinion- this is the first decent franchise they have produced since Walking with Dinosaurs.

Because of this Franchise- my faith in TV has been renewed again.
