Academy Award-winners Gregory Peck (1962, Best Actor, To Kill A Mockingbird), David Niven (1958, Best Actor, Separate Tables), and Anthony Quinn (1952, Best Supporting Actor, Viva Zapata!; 1956, Lust For Life) star as a team of Allied military specialists recruited for a dangerous but imperative mission: to infiltrate a Nazi-occupied fortress and disable two long-range field guns so that 2,000 trapped British soldiers may be rescued.

Faced with an unforgiving sea voyage, hazardous terrain, and the possibility of a traitor among them, the team must overcome the impossible without losing their own lives. Adapted by screenwriter Carl Foreman from Alistair MacLean's best-selling novel, The Guns Of Navarone was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, and won for Best Special Effects (1961).

45 year old films on blu-ray???

| | See all thezachsta's reviews (2)

While this film will always be a classic in every way, what is the point in transfering grainy old mono films to blu-ray?? Is this the industry's way of recouping on loses for some of the dross they have seen fit to release over the years??? Just reaching for my TGON dvd (upsaled to 1080p) can't get any better than this - or can it?

Verdict:
Very good picture and sound for this master-piece which was well restored.
A true pleasure to watch this film again in such fantastic conditions.
The colours were corrected and balanced and clearly it makes a difference as explained in the restoration documentary.
Thanks to the Blu-ray, we can not only watch the film with (or without) the intermission as originally released in 1961:
- With intermission: 161 minutes
- Without intermission: 156 minutes
But we can also see some details we were not meant to see !
- Model of the island exploding at the end at the film is quite obvious especially when the cannons are falling into the sea.
- We can even see the join of paint on the "wallpaper" imitating the skyline during the explosion scene.
- Pictures added in post-production are not that unobtrusive, for instance the "citadel" of Navarone and the island where the citadel is supposed to be or when the team is supposedly being climbing, for all the shot, the sea was added in post-prod.
- The shadow of the 35 mm camera is visible on the top of the truck when they are escaping (interrogation scene, at 96 min and 50 sec without intermission selected)
Nevertheless, this motion picture is fantastic with a good story-line and some great sceneries of Greece.
You shall not be disappointed.

 More 70mm classics to blueray

This classic film was shooted with 70mm film. You can't top the resolution of 70mm film with blueray. So if originale negative is available it's possible to get better print from this than Casino Royale. I'm waiting this and other great 70mm big classics to blueray.

'GREAT ADVENTURE WITH A ''GREAT-CAST LIST''

sadly i have to agree some with earlier reviewers, the transfer to blu-ray isn't great, however the film itself is a collector's, must-own with a cast-list from the who's -who of talented actors of that time.
portraying 'alistair maclean's' best-selling novel to the silver screen.
a small team of specialist's are sent on an imposible mission to destroy two massive 'gun's' that have sunk many vessel's and make a naval rescue mission to save 2000 trapped soldiers hazerdous.
the team face many obsticles along the way with death being their probable reward for their effort.
it's a really good war-time drama that deserves a viewing at the very least.

This classic film gets a great picture upgrade to BLU. It has been extensively remastered and is a huge difference over the DVD. I was amazed how good this looks. So in response to a previous reviewer yes there is a great difference. Plus a shed load of quality extras. The restoration feature was extremely interesting. Quality release.
