The Sergio Leone "Spaghetti Westerns" did not simply add a new chapter to the genre... they reinvented it. From his shockingly violent and stylized breakthrough, A Fistful Of Dollars, to the film Quentin Tarantino calls "the best directed movie of all time," The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, Leone's vision did for westerns what talkies did for all movies back in the 1920s: it elevated them to an entirely new art form. Fully restored, presented with their best-ever audio, and including audio commentaries, featurettes and more, these films are much more than just the definitive Leone collection... they are the most ambitious and influential westerns ever made.

Titles Comprise:

A Fistful Of Dollars: The first of the "spaghetti westerns", A Fistful Of Dollars became an instant cult hit. It also launched the film careers of Italian Writer-Director Sergio Leone, and a little known American television actor named Clint Eastwood. As the lean, cold-eye cobra-quick gunfighter - Clint became the first of the "anti-heroes". The cynical, enigmatic loner with a clouded past is the same character Eastwood fans have been savouring ever since. A Fistful Of Dollars is the western taken to the extreme - with unremitting violence, gritty realism and tongue-in-cheek humour. Leone's direction is taut and stylish, and the visuals are striking - from the breathtaking panoramas (in Spain) to the extreme close-ups of quivering lips and darting eyes before the shoot-out begins. And all are accented by renowned film composer Ennio Morricone's quirky, haunting score.

For A Few Dollars More: Clint Eastwood had proven so successful in his first foray into European Westerns with A Fistful Of Dollars that a follow up sequel was inevitable. Superbly scripted by Luciano Vincenzoni, featuring an unforgettable alliance between ruthless gun-slingers Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef. For A Few Dollars More tells the tale of a ruthless quest to track down the notorious bandit El Indio played by Gian Maria Volonte. The film is also noted for its array of weaponry, a veritable arsenal of rifles that became so operatic and Ennio Morricone's atmospheric score keeps the tension taut as the action moves from Jail breaks and hold-ups to spectacular gun battles.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly: The third and last western in Clint Eastwood's spaghetti trilogy. Director Sergio Leone substitutes for the upright puritan Protestant ethos, so familiar in Hollywood westerns, a seedy cynical standpoint towards death and mortality, as a team of brutal bandits battle to unearth a fortune buried beneath an unmarked grave. Joining Clint, clearly "The Good", is the irredeemably "Bad" Lee and the resolutely "Ugly" Eli Wallach. The complete plot of bloodshed and betrayal winds its way through the American Civil War, filmed to resemble the French battlefields of World War One, to end in the climatic Dance Of Death. Arguably the quintessential Italian Western, this 1966 film boasts a fine Ennio Morricone score featuring a main theme that reached No. 1 in the world's pop charts.

3 of my all time fav movies but such a horrid transfer

I would give the movies themselves 10 stars if i could as movies they are perfect, i was really excited to see these on blu ray remastered and in HD. However i was sick when i found the transfers were either the same as the recent DVD release or in the case of FAFDM to be worse, so specklely and very washed out some scenes looked worse than overs on the blu ray putting the remastered dvds and they were so much better less grain speckles and very few scratches. Please stick to the DVD's if you have them and if you appreciate then in best format BLU Ray will let you down on this release

Good and Bad, not totally Ugly

Three great films deserving of state of the art transfers are let down by Fox. Fistful is wrongly framed with slight cropping, Few Dollars More is very nice looking but is still missing about 20 seconds. Good, Bad Ugly is the biggest disappointment as its clearly sourced from the 2002 restoration with edge enchancement, haloing, digital noise reduction and waxy faces. It still looks better than the current DVD though. A disappointing way to handle three classic films but its as good as you're going to get unless Paramount who own the rights to the first two films in Germany do their own superior restorations as they did for the DVDs

'GREAT FILMS' transfer should have been much better.

yes the films are indeed 'a must own' for all action and western fans.
these three 'spaghetti westerns' changed the standards for this genre forever, the main character could be hit around a bit, walk in a saloon covered in trail dust, and even shot.
one by one the three films just got better each instalment, with the third in the series becoming an all time 'classic' western.
'clint eastwood' a gunman with no-name, cool, and fast with his gun.
each of the films had it's measure of humour within 'the one-liners' and most certainly launched 'clint eastwood' into super-stardom.
sadly as pointed out by an earlier reviewer, the enhancement is little better in picture quality to the 'dvd' re-releases a few years back.
given the 'status' of these films i to feel more effort to enhance should have been made, never-the-less ----the movies themselves are well worth having in your collection.

 Very grainy at times

I have never owned the DVD version of Fistful so it was good to have it in high definition. I must admit it was a letdown in picture and sound quality. Sounds weak, colours bleached plus some horrible graininess.

Again never owned the DVD version of Few Dollars. This suffers from the same problems as Fistful. Grainy and quite flickery too. Sound was good though. If you're happy with your DVD versions, stick with those.

I have however owned several versions of GBU and this is superb. Excellent picture quality and clarity of sound. No grain (that I noticed at least) and even the extended scenes look good.

GBU is worth upgrading for fans, but I would imagine the upscaled versions of the DVD of Fistful and Few Dollars would be as good as this bluray effort, if not better.
