Sci-Fi and western have never gone well together as1999's disaster The Wild,Wild,West and 2010's write off Jonah Hex still resonate as Turkey's!
But with the early trailers of Cowboys & Aliens this movie looked like it could put the record straight. With being produced by Speilberg and Ron Howard and also starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and the drop dead beautiful Olivia Wilde (Tron Legacy) The movie if nothing else should be the guilty pleasure of the Summer of 2011. But with the summer being bombarded with Robots fisting them selves to death, Wizards fighting the final battle and every Marvel second grade comic book being on the screen this movie was always going to have a fight on it's hands.
The good news is that Cowboys & Aliens surpasses my expectations as it's a western first that happens to have aliens in it!
The comedy element has been toned down and the characters have been flushed out more. Craig is excellent as the stranger who walks into town missing his memory, Harrison Ford is the best he has been in ages as the gruff rauncher and Wilde is just stunning, so much so she's almost a destraction as at times I was looking at her more than the action. The creature design is great imagine a toad from hell crossed with a crab and you'll be half way there. The plot also is pretty good and tight and Directed from the same guy who did the excellent Iron Man and the flabby Avengers advert that was Iron Man 2 keeps the plot tight, with a few well timed plot reverlations and the action swift and at times brutal. The effects are great and the music score is brilliant.
Some may complain that it may miss a few action sequences to contend with the big summer event movies, but I found the slower pace a refreshing change and what it may lack in missing one or two action sequences it gains by well written characters.
This is one of the better summer event movies that although may not bring in Billion plus dollars of the likes of Transformers and Harry Potter hopefuly will gain a more cult following and with a bit of luck a sequel.

Eight Legged Freaks.

Finaly a summer movie that has been as good as the trailer promised, this one I enjoyed after the dissapointment of blockbusters this summer. Daniel Craig is convincing as a the rough and rugged outlaw that is trying to get his memory back after waking in the middle of the dessert with a strange bracelet strapped to his wrist. Harrison Ford is Harrison ford playing a hard as nails ranch owner with a bee in his bonnet after Daniels character has robbed him of his gold. Enter the aliens hell bent on destroying everything and taking everyone and with the help of his flashbacks and a mysterious beauty, everyone join forces to hunt for the aliens and find the abducted. Jon Favereu directs and Steven Spielberg produces a great action adventure which can pass as a good authentic western when the aliens are not on screen. A big improvement to his dissapointing Iron Men movies.

Took my 9 year old son to see this, was very sceptical if the cowboy and alien thing would work, but to be fair it did, both daniel craig and harrison ford were superb in this.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars  A excellent film for both sci-fi and western fans!

The first thing that made me think Cowboys & Aliens might be a very good film was when I saw the trailer which showed it had my childhood favourite actor "Harrison Ford" whom starred in such classic sci-fi films as Star Wars and Blade Runner and "Daniel Craig" another great actor who is the new James Bond and has also starred in the films The Golden Compass and The Invasion. The special effects looked very impressive in the tailer too and with those two very big name actors, I just knew this film was going to be something rather special and it was even better then I was hoping for. The film starts off like a normal type western part from the fact that Daniel Craig has this hi-tec piece of equipment stripped and locked onto his wrist after waking up in the middle of nowhere not knowing where he is or who is. These not so nice cowboys come across him stranded in the middle of nowhere and start being nasty towards him which is a big mistake because Daniel Craig is like the James Bond of cowboys and kills them all with ease!
Daniel Craig makes into a small town and this is where we get to meet Harrison Ford who plays a tough cattle rancher owner who used to be a general in the army. Fords son was causing trouble in the town and he tries his tough boy act on with Daniel Craig whom nearly knocks him out with one punch and then the young trouble maker gets up and shoots his gun which the bullet hits another town member. So he gets arrested and his rich daddy Ford has to try and free his son for his foolish behaviour. Daniel Craig may not know his name but he is a wanted a man dead or alive!
As Ford rides into town with his men the Aliens arrive soon after in their small ufo's and start picking the people up one by one and taking them away. Daniel Craigs hi-tec piece of equipment on his wrist comes to life and shoots one of the ufo's down with a mega blast. All the town folk have had loved ones taken away from the aliens and they must all work as a team if they are to get their loved ones back safe and sound. The aliens are a lot stronger then us humans and can run very fast too. They have extra arms inside their chest which opens up and you can also see their heart beating there too. The action in this film is very exciting and well filmed and I also found the story to be well told too. I am a massive fan of both sci-fi and western films and the way Cowboys & Aliens mixed these two genres together is amazing and I can't see how anyone could've done a better job really. "Olivia Wilde" makes a lovely bit a eye candy and the blu-ray picture is razor sharp. If you like your sci-fi and western films like I do then hopefully you should love this film as much me because in my humble opinion it should not be missed.

yup....you may think i enjoyed this ''out of reality western' ....' i did '
a stranger wanders into the small town of 'absolution' with no memory of who he is, the town is not a welcome place for strangers, also 'rancher' ''colonol dolarhyde' calls the shots.
the town is about to expierience an out-of-this-world expeirience, and folk are about to be ''wafted-away''
the stranger has been identified as a wanted-man, his name is 'jake' the band he wears on his arm is under his mental control, though he knows not how he came to wear it---yet that is.
'jake' joins the colonol and a mystery woman along with ranch-hands and some of the town folk to track down the 'aliens' and their missing people which includes the colonol's son ''percy''
somehow the strange concept works a treat......if ya' enjoy westerns and sci-fi action....the films a must..........................enjoy.

OK.....so my expectations were not high when I seen the title but boy did they change after viewing this blu-ray. The Story starts off as a classy Western with Daniel Craig as a lone Drifter wanted by the Law in the middle nowhere only to be challenged by a few bounty hunters. Harrison Ford plays the cliched owner of many establishments in a small town and Olivia Wilde is a mysterious sidekick who is interested in Craigs past, What I didn't expect was the introduction of space ships hurling people from the ground like a lasso only to take them to their mothership the reason of which becomes clearer further into the film. It is very entertaining stuff if you can switch your brain off and enjoy the ride. Special effects are very good but the blu-ray shines in both the visual and particularly audio department. With both Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard down on a list of Producers and Executive Producers then it would encourage you to think that it's not a bad film and you'd be right. Good family entertainment on a sublime blu-ray disc so I'm going to stick my neck out and say Highly Recommended...

Different sort of film for Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. Two fine actors, was the main reason for getting this film. Starts a bit slow then picks up. Both Craig and Harrison acted well but story was to say the least, strange. Cowboy movie, not really. Si Fi movie not quite.
Entertaining, yes, perhaps will need to view a few times.
