Explicit, awe inspiring and refreshingly original

| | See all Kyle89's reviews (173)

One of the most original and uniquely put together films I've seen for a long time, a very psychological dramatic film with plenty of nice splices of horror. Very tripped out with only two characters in it and no music score between opening and end credits, this is very different.

And very explicit, shocking REAL sex scenes and extreme violence with no cutaways and some of the most tripped out scenes I've seen since Twin Peaks. Filmed beautifully and looks exhilirating on blu-ray.

It's very arty, filmed in a daring and very unique style and is definitely one of those films that is both written and directed in a style similar to David Lynch and the like in that you either get it or you don't. This film won't be for everyone and you shouldn't necessarily expect it to make sense or be anything other than what it is. Very inspiring, I'd reccommend to any film fan.

  'tense stuff'

| | See all rbmusicman's reviews (896)

the film does somehow transmit long periods of tention without really going anywhere.
after the tragic loss of their young son, the couples marriage is at breaking point, they decide to try and mend their marriage and come to terms with the loss of their young son by travelling to their cabin which is situated in the middle of a forest and is remote as it gets.
william defoe try's to help his wife through her grief, but tention mounts, the getaway begins to turn into a nightmare.
with some pretty graphic violence along with explicit sex- scenes the film does hold your attention.
worth watching if but ----once.

  Turns your mind upside down!!!!!

This film was different. I have never seen a movie that only depended on two characters alone. It was handled really well and while most people have commented on the explicit content, it is also the journey it takes your mind to. It shows a big turn in cinema from your usual psychological thrillers/horrors. I finished this film thinking to myself "Oh My God, That Was Brilliant" yet at the same time i was scratching my head thinking how could this have ever had been conceived. Definately one of the best films i have ever seen.

  TERRIBLE FILM

As an avid film buff, I must say that this film is truly rubbish, a load of boring pointless time, most of the time is spent talking and showing useless images. If your expecting something like a good horror then dont bother. Waste of time and money.

lars von trier dares to go to a place that truly open minded people and lovers of extreme cinema want to go with him. the film is both beautiful and extremely uncomfortable at the same time. rich in both story and gorgeous visuals. so many bizarre and down right wrong things happen on screen, but they never feel too hard to handle. i found myself not wanting to look away even on the most disturbing sequences (cough *scissors* cough)...
outstanding performances throughout, and that includes the fox hahaha. in my mind, phenominal and very important, just as irreversible was back in the day.

Review of movie, not the BD

A strong, visually disturbing piece of art. A psychological as well as supernatural thriller that has you captured from the very first extremely stylish minutes until the end - a must see for any lover of films and grotesque/beautiful imagery.
