Firstly, forget any connection Torchwood may have with Doctor Who. This five-part mini series, which comprises Season 3 of Torchwood, stands alone on its own merit: and handsomely too. Unexpectedly, all the children in the world suddenly freeze and begin chanting the ominous words "We are coming..." - over the next five days, a sequence of events unfolds which results in the government having to confront the consequences of previous cover-ups and embark on a course which not only threatens the members of Torchwood, but every family in the country and the break-up of society as we know it. Combining a tremendously bold, thought-provoking and emotional script, a gripping storyline including a malevolent alien race who are never quite in full view and some tremendous perfromances from John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Gareth David-Lloyd, Peter Capaldi and Nicholas Farrell this is not only British sci-fi at its best - at times reminiscent of Quatermass, but with more depth and more thought-provoking - this ranks with any sci-fi programme produced in the last fifty years. Beautifully photographed and featuring an excellent heart-thumping score by Ben Foster, the series could have been made for Blu-Ray. If this is the end of Torchwood, as has been rumoured, it's a hell of a swansong. But it would be a shame - for this feels like a series that has finally lived up to its promise and hit its stride.
Seen by some as a gamble - series 3 was screened on BBC1 over 5 consecutive nights and thanks to this, Torchwood came of age providing us with what what was promised from the shows initial launch - a tense, sci fi flavoured, political thriller.
Torchwood:children of Earth was completely gripping and an intense, viewer compelling drama, each episode ensured you would tune in the following night and with its plot twists, and turns it was impossible to guess what would happen next.
The actual story dealt with the rollercoaster of every human emotion possible, but mainly fear, sorrow and the impossibility of making choices over loyalties and loves. This series brought tears to this reviewers eyes 3 times!
With a brilliantly fresh and well thought out plotine, developed scripts, thoughtful direction and superb acting, this series has been a joy and proved that this sort of presentation of a 5 night hour long drama when used correctly, can work tremendously well.
Certainly the only thing watching on BBC1 this entire week.
Due to the ending of the show though, i would remind parents however, that Torchwood is not meant for the same audience as Doctor Who - certainly not its younger fans and at least two of the revelations in this story would prove upsetting to them and certainly destroy the reputation of captain Jack with them.
Brilliant.
Torchwood's always been close to my heart since the very beginning, and as I got my Blu-Ray Player just days after the release of this blu-ray you can imagine this was one of the first things to enter the shopping basket.
Firstly, the picture and sound is flawless, and although essentially this isn't a really visual story, I do think it adds to the release. The sound is also superb too again adding that depth that the normal release just wouldn't have given.
The series in itself was FANTASTIC (minus my dismay at the rather traumatic Day 5) and you can tell that when Torchwood took the leap from BBC Two to BBC One the writers got themselves in gear. Just after this aired I went back and watched a couple of episodes from series 2... and it was APPUALING! No joke was it terrible, I loved it when it was on, but Children of Earth is in another leauge. But the two side by side and it's no wonder Children of Earth has gained such recognition. You can tell the actors have grown into their own roles and the series has taken a big step towards the mature show that it should've started as.
In all this release is FANTASTIC, roll on Series 4!
Torchwood has had mixed reviews. Hopefully this series will disuade the critics, and show the potential the series has, to be darker and edgier than Doctor Who, and establish it for itself. Superb combination of action and comedy - and having watched this on BBC HD, the Blu-Ray release should be superb.
when i watched this on BBC1 I thought it was excellent, unlike the first two series which were single episodes this was a 5 hour special, and when i mean special, gone were the crude sexual innuendo's and then the story stood on its own. The story process some interesting questions if you had to sacrifice a number of children which one's would you choose the non achievers or the brilliant ones. The cast is excellent Eva Myles gets better and better. John Barroman puts in a great performance to. Is this Doctor who for adults, no this is something that stands on its own and proved by a forth season on the way .
