in a phrase, a mediocre, bog standard war movie. nothing that hasnt been done before- hand held camera, grainy film, etc etc. it was ok, but nothing special. the phrase 'best war film' conjours up 'platoon', or 'saving private ryan'. not this.
This movie has been blown (forgive the pun) out of all proportion, it has been hailed as the best war movie ever made, and is winner of the best movie category at the Oscars 2010, for what? This is nothing special in fact Three Kings (1999) with George Cloney was a far better (Iraqi) war movie. What this movie does show however, as with most war movies involving American troops, is their inadequacy and lack of training and one scene in this movie illustrates it perfectly when a higher ranking officer joins the bomb disposal team for a day trip because hes bored and gets blown to bits (you will know where I`m coming from when you see it), totally ridiculous!
This is an "ok" movie, nothing special and definately not worth an Oscar, a lot of money must have changed hands at Hollywood this year (as usual!!!)
I was really excited about this film after all the rave reviews and its success at the oscars. I have no idea where they are coming from - very slow, tame and uneventful. It's 2hrs15mins and feels like 4hrs, with an anticlimactic ending. Blueray is purposely grainy, so don't bother with it. If you liked the 2005 oscar winner 'Crash', then this is the film for you. Not impressed.
There is just no pace to the film. One scene after another with little storyline. Some reviewers have mentioned tension but for me it didn't work.
Wanted the film to be really good as I like this genre but it didn't happen. Would not recommend. Not rotten however there are many better films like this out there.
An exceedingly slow film with very sparse moments of action. It's a a bit like Jarhead, as in, it has no real emotional core and there's no journey. It's essentially waffle with a bit of dialogue and the odd (very odd) bang. The characters are also quite dull so even they don't save this film.
I get the feeling this is the Emperor's New Clothes syndrome here. I for one realise that he's stark naked. This is an average tv movie at best.
It's certainly no Platoon - that's for sure
